I picked up a programming tip at a recent session that really works for me. In a 4/4 pattern, the snare that hits on beat four is shifted late one tick. All hi hats are shifted one tick later. This is very subtle, but it grooves.
Note: For double-timers, shift the second snare two ticks later, and all hi hats two ticks later.
