Post your views and questions about the Akai MPC2500

I finally got one today and..I don't think it's quantize has character like

the 2000,3000 and 60 series.I have owned every mpc made and I have

came to the conclusion that the 3000 has the best sound (the 60 for those

who like a more dirty sound) The 2000 has the best quantize feel. The

1000, 4000, and 2500 all have a "neutral" feel to the quantize. These

days I think I am looking more for character in music equipment. The

speed of technology helps but at a great expense. Oh well, you can't

have everything. Contemplating if I should return this thing. What do

guys think?

:? Swing?

Use the swing mode to create your own feel.
Neutral is want I want. It helps me be more creative. I,m not giving up anything. Plus after future O.S. updates the machine will be capable of flying.... :? yeah I said it....FLYING.

Seriously I wouldnt trade it in. Like the others the 2500 will prove itself through the user accessing all of it now and future capabilities which will set it apart from the other mentioned MPC's. It's whatever floats your boat though, they are all great machines. I love the 2500 over the rest though. :)

turn off time correct or adjust it to a more specific setting...?

although you have had all the mpcs before this, it sounds like you just need to work a little more with it. i have a 1k and it's just as expressive as i need it to be, or as rock solid as i need it to be...

I totally agree that the MPC 2000 is awesome..its has the best feel to me as well.

You will just have to get use to programming on the MPC 2500. It will take time.

As far as sound...the quantize/timing functions have nothing to do with the MPC's audio signal...I take it you do know this :D

i went from a 2000xl to a 2500 and i had to get used to the 2500's sequencer. it's timimg is very stiff but just like everyone else has said, you had to utilize the swing function.

It is stiff.. different but that could be a good thing... Trying out the sequencer in double time. I wish they put the later-earlier shift in the T.C. window.

i think talent also plays a factor in whether the music you're mpc is playing is good or not, regardless of quantized notes or not. yep i said it. musical talent might be the problem in this department.

if it isn't art then just throw it in the trash can and let the bacteria grow into maggots and consume it.

O.K. People  He admitted to jumping the gun let's give him a break. We all know how we are use to certain things and become a little bias. Still as you see you have to forget how previous machines act and start out new and "free your mind your a$$ will follow".
The 2500 is dope regardless of difference in functionality you will just have to change your workflow slightly. :)
I also have a 2000 and it's dope as well but the more you play with the 2500 the more you will adapt and like the machine. As you can tell I'm sold  .

Okay I never owned an mpc2k, I always get curious about this::

to the best of your knowledge, what is going on with the timing that makes it sound better? Say you have a sequence that is quantized to 16th notes, 50% swing (ie no swing).

Would the notes play back::

-a little 'off the grid' like with some random error?
or
-with a little bit of swing, even though you chose zero swing?
or
-something else i don't understand?

Somebody should do some timing measurements by analyzing the audio output on a grid:: anyone have a link to that?

What I remember reading about that is this:

Not claiming that he's dead right though, but makes sense to me...

Cheers,
Stilo.

FOB - ultimately I think it all depends on your work flow and compositional technique. Is it your primary sampler? If so, do you sample and chop on it a lot? If "yes" to either of these, the 2500 is worth keeping IMO because of:

1. MUCH faster processor, which = faster editing and moving around
2. Real-time preview of samples before loading
3. Chop Shop (though I haven't used it seriously yet) - can help stretch your creativity
4. Sliders and knobs - make editing samples and adjusting mixer settings intuitive
5. Dedicated input thru button - might not seem like a big deal, but if you sample a lot you'll come to appreciate the brilliance of this little user-interface design element
6. USB transfers - being able to mount the MPC2500 as a drive on my PC and dragging files back and forth right out of the box is awesome

There are others as folks around here have talked about; bottom-line is that overall, the flow of working is improved in little places, so that in aggregate the entire experience of creating music on this thing is improved quite a bit.

I used to have a 2kXL, and while I do miss some things (being able to step through beats with the forward button and hear them, for example) the advantages outweigh any cons.

Like folks have said though, it takes time to get used to the new level of power under the hood, and dealing with the quirks of an OS that's not quite optimal yet...

I second that Tanaka but now that the new O.S. is out I'd say it is optimal now :D He11 yeah!
