Newbie needing some help with choices.

Well i've been readin alot of post and im happy to say that thank God that i was able to stumble upon this site. 1st things 1st i've been makin hip-hop tracks for about a year now on (C)rap (P)roduction (U)niverse and decide to leave tha computer and go hardware. But never used a piece like this in my life and im excited yet afraid that i might sound wack as heck. But non tha less i'm gettin a 1000 and i was think about a program called recycle. Any encouragement and/or thoughts. And would this be a nice combo (1000 and recycle)


also how do i get samples on my own wit this thing?

Recycle and the 1000 would be a nice combo for sample / loop based production. One of the most laborious parts of MPC based production (I find) is tweaking the sounds on the MPC. I much prefer using a WAV editor and a computer, then putting everything on the MPC and banging at the pads.

As for samples, you can purchase drum hits, breaks and loops from the nice people at mpc-samples.com. You can download (free) hits, pads and other sounds from Hollowsun or just start encoding vinyl / ripping CDs / recording crazy people on the subway.

The one other item you might need is a good sound card or audio interface for your computer.

I want to say thank you for tha help and tha commits. One question tho how do i sample from cd and chop up samples. i've been hearin alot of dj Hi-teks stuff and a kat named 9th wonder. i dont think ive ever heard any of primo's beats but i'm lookin for some nice stuff to jump into that sound area. any vinyl suggestions would b helpful.

You can either connect a CD player to the 1000 and record into it, then use the Trim function to make the sample the length you want and extract parts of it or you can put the CD into your computer, rip the tracks you want to sample as WAVs and use a WAV editor to extract what you want. Recycle does this kind of thing pretty much automatically.

As for vinyl recommendations, go buy a bunch of interesting looking $1 records from a second hand store. If you hear anything you like, sample it...

You may want to grab a copy of sound forge as well, these three kings
(sound forge, recycle, and mpc) will take you very far.

For wax, all you need to do is type "record store" in yahoo/google
this will point you twards plenty of store for records and beats on wax.

As for how to sample and chop up beats...
Try this.
record the beats into sound forge

clip and cut the loop to the best you can, import the loop or sound into recycle and let it work for you.

once your are complete save as a wav and pop that bad boy into you mpc, ready to rip.

I even use the sound forge to record the final mix of my track and master it.

Concerning Recycle: If the MPC1000 A) doesn't have SCSI and B) doesn't read .rex files, and C) only appears to your PC as a Flash Card, then how are you going to take advantage of what ReCycle is for.
Does ReCycle now have a "Export Slices As Individual Files" option?
Anyone actually use ReCycle with an MPC?

I do all the time. I just A) export the file into a wav file, B) save it to the hard drive and C) drop it into the MPC.

easy as A, B, C.

I'm suprised no one mentioned a software program called MPCEditor ($30). Once you chop up your loop in Recycle, save it as an "akp file". Open up "MPCEditor" and go to "file/ import recycle akp file". It will automatically spread your chopped up loop across the MPCEditor's pads on your computer screen. Now all you have to do is name the program/ export it as a MPC2000XL program, so the MPC1000 can read it, and save it to your Compact flash Card. Once you disconnect your USB Cable & go to mode/load on the 1000 & load the program , the sounds will already be mapped out across your MPC. All you would have to do is just change the settings for the samples to"mono". No assigning samples to pads & naming programs - the MPCEditor helps with this. Check it out.

you never heard a beat from primo? if you dont know primo then you dont know hiphop. Sadly this is a very bad time to know hiphop.
