Sampling records

Do you listen to the whole record or do you just record it in your computer or something and just sample it fast from your computer?

I'm now listening to the whole record and sample the peaces i can use in my mpc and slice it there.

whats your way of doing it?

do whatever finds you the hot sample.

i skimm through the tracks. i listen to the intro, the hook, and the break. most likely you wont find too much between the intro and hook. once i find what i want i just record the sample...not the whole track

i personally think that if you find a song that has a good sample in it, you should listen to the whole song after that. wether it kills you or not. lots of times the song will totally switch up right in the middle of it. could be lots of great samples in those spots you skip over!

smoove - even tho i didnt state that, i usually do find myself going through the whole track. lots of times i end up looking for some filler, little stabs or bleeps i can use. good lookin on the tip tho.

most classic joints find the samples in the nooks and crannies, some on the intros but ANYBODY can find that shit

you know w hats up smoove thats a real sample digger there.

dont deprive yourself of the music thats in the rest of the song you could be missing the best spot it sont have to be a break, intro or hook, listen to the complete record see what creativity you gett from the cats you sample from.!!!!!!

not only that, but by listening to the whole song you're gonna get more inspiration than by just listening to pieces. Not saying this is the only way, but sometimes it will change my idea.

I look at it like, If your going to take music that someone else made and not take enough time to listen to all of what that person had to express. Then Its kinda shi**y. I try to respect what that artist had done and rethink it.
But to let yall know I'm not to high and mighty, if its some kids record or random crap than I'm skimin through that ish and then bang..

the corniest shit has the best samples. If i just stopped listening to it cause it was corny id miss all the goodness

I listen to the whole **** thing.

if i ahve to go through every song entirely ..
1. i forgot what i was looking for
2. ill be up all night making a single 4 bar loop
.. not a good idea ... to me

obviously theres exception. Like if you gotta snag something before you finish listening to the rest of the song. But for me, generally its the whole song.

Another fun way to find samples is to just do random needle drops in the middle of a song (works best for instrumental records) and then force yourself to make a song out of the first few notes you hear. You can get some good songs going this way out of things you might not ever have thought to sample.

forcing yourself, huh? i actually had to force myself to use this crazy sample on this track called Its Aight. it was crazy man but i did my best to flip it. lol i understand what you mean though
