MPC1000 Hard Drive Recommendations

did you try deleting the primary dos partition using the fdisk command before installing it? you'll need a windows 95, 98, or ME boot disk (floppy).

I'm going for a Hitachi Travelstar 60G 2.5" Laptop Hard Drive - Adapter kit for MPC1000 ordered. Can't wait to get those samples on the hard drive and to throw away those annoying little flash cards! Funny how AKAI left a space for the hard drive upgrade Just need a RAM upgrade and we're all sorted )

anyone know the difference between 16mb cache and 8mb cache? i just picked up a seagate 100gb ata/100 with 8mb cache. if its no big deal i'll keep it but if its not going to work, i won't even open it, i'll just take it back.

there's a buffer of ram to help the hard drive prevent read/write errors, having 8mb is by no means a bad thing, and you shouldn't notice a difference at all.

Has anyone installed this hard drive "Toshiba MK4025GAS 40GB" or any other 9.5mm drive with the kit with no problems. Most of the hard drivers that I have seen have been 9.5 and the kit req's 9mm. Anyone?

anyone else getting little clicks/pops when you audition phrase samples from HD? no big deal to me just curious if any of you guys experience this too?

....another clue maybe??

Sifted through the V2 manual and guess what...? No info on HD!

I'll tell you in a couple of days whether the 60G Toshiba works or not.

Guys, guys... hard drives are supposed to be standard. Are you expecting Akai to publish a list of drives, and say drives not on the list won't work? Well, I just plugged in a 6GB drive I had hanging around since about 1999, which has been used for various OS types (incl. Linux) and... worked first time. It's slow, a bit noisy, but how much speed do we need for this job?

Also, here's a trick for backing the drive up on the PC: get the Microsoft SyncToy and set it up to synchronize the MPC drive with another directory. Every time you sync, it copies the changed files (and only the changed files) in both directions. That means you can do stuff on either side and it's kept up-to-date. Even e.g. delete a file on the MPC, and it gets deleted on the PC next time you sync. Me likey!

again, for those who don't mind taking their drive out each time to back up large quantities of files or to load large quantities, you can use something like this: hell, it's only $10

ok, i've encountered something thats gonna kill my work flow. whenever i'm sampling i usaually take a bunch of samples, delete all my programs ans save "all programs and samples" so i don't have to save each one individually. well when i try to save like that to the HD the whole thing freezes up, nothing works, no buttons, no dial, nothin. i was able to transfer about 10 gigs worth of samples, kits, pgms, etcc and they all saved and workd fine by drag n drop via usb. i can still save one sample at a time but its kinda of a **** having to do that after takin samples for a few hours. i'm gonna try to format the HD again and before i transfer all my shit i'm gonna try to take a few samples and save as i mentioned above. anyone else have this problem?

edit: looks like i can save "all programs and samples" to the root or an existing folder but this sucks.

edit#2: after reformatting the HD i took a few samples, deleted all pgms and saved "all programs and samples" to root, creating a new folder and it worked. then i did the same process and saved to a new folder inside the one i just made to test saving to subfolders and that worked too. so then i did it one more time to a second subfolder just to be sure and it worked again. so i'm not sure what happend when i reformatted the HD? among the samples that i transfered yesterday were all those breaks going around a while back. i think i kept the folders titled the same, tek breaks, declassified breaks and web breaks. the only thin i can figure is one of those files was fukd up and messin with my shit.? well i guess it means i should not have been usin that downloaded shit anyway. i think i might go back to vinyl only?

I used an old IBM Travelstar 20G drive from an old mac pc.
ATA - 9.5mm 4200rpm

Soooooooo......easy to install

I've just installed an 80gb 5400RPM fujitsu, works no problem at all. I tried to install that sync copy thing that someone mentioned but XP is being gay and wont install a certain file i need to run the program
