ASR-X

I have an 1K and I was wondering if it was a waste of money if I buy an ASR to sample. I am hoping to cop one on ebay for my birthday but I want to be sure that my hard earned money will be put into good use. I have used the search function and have seen some debate. Still I do not know if there is a distinct advantage of having an ASR for tweaking my samples. Reading the post from the past it seems like I should buy a MIDI keyboard first. I have PH Reason but should i get cubase instead?

ive never used the asr-x, but i wouldnt bother with one, i believe that they dont have as much usability as an asr-10, more like a stripped down table top version.

why not use the mpc for sampling?

your 1k is jsut as good as asrx with sampling, so for you to get a asrx
while you already have a 1k is money gone that can be used for a midi keyboard which you will love and possibly need as your skill level goes up.

get the midi keyboard instead. don't spend money twice just guessing like you are doing now..

hey partna! Lamp's right, I sold the ASR-10 to get the MPC2000XL ,also had two ASR-XPro. Had Two, sold one and sent the other back to a well known music company,they sent me two ,but Lamps right ,why would you waste money getting another drumsampling station , when you could invest n something you need? And anyways if I did get another ASR ,it would be the ASR-10. That way I would have a midi Keyboard > and a sampler

I've used my cousins asrx and I love it because it is so grimey but I prefer my 2000xl over anything. It is a nice piece to have though. If you do get one make sure the screen is fully functional. My cousins fades in and out.

Now what type of MIDI keyboard do you guys recommend? I know that I could get a cheap one for about a bill but I want to spend a little more and get something that I will need later on. What types od feature am I looking to get? Any good manufactureres to look out for?

The sampling engine on the ASR's far exceed's ANY MPC. MPC's excel in sequencing, the sampler is just a bonus. Adding a ASR-X on the other hand wouldnt be the wise desicion. Personally i would add a ASR-10 61 key so you can play out some melodies.

All mpc's samplers sound thin with the exception of the 60. Yet the 60 has a big fat zero in the filter department. Although its do-able to work without it. Nothing touches the intuitive sequencer on any MPC, though.

I guess thats a matter of opinion. The 3k's sampler/sound engine wont even come close to touching the ASR's in terms of sound manipulation (effects, filters, env). This is where ANY ASR excels. Weather its the X or 10. Its lacking sequencer wise compared to MPC's. What im getting at is no it wouldnt be a waste of money. If you are looking for a sampler to slave from your MPC (which many people do) a asr would make a great addition. They keys would be the obvious better choice or you could swing for the ASR rack.
