Could be a number of things

Make sure you can account for your doings with the instructions provided here

http://www.mpc2000xl.com/memory_install.htm

Check compatibility here:

http://www.mpc2000xl.com/MPC_memory.htm

Then have a read through this:

i think you got the wrong memory stick :(

correct me if im wrong, but for the full 32 mb, dont you need two 16 mb sticks? this is how it is for my MPC2000 classic (but it might be different for the xl).

I have 2x16mb in mine.. Obviously the MPC will not recognize the RAM if it's bad..

I think you have to buy the mpc memory in pairs...ie two 16mb sticks. that's how i did mine and i had no problems.

Nope, but if you look in the manual it clearly advises you to get two 16Mb for such reasons as incompatability. Though some will work not all 32mb chips will.

When I first expanded the memory I tried using one 32 mb stick but it would never recognize it. I returned the 32 mb and exchanged it for another one and the same results. I ended up having to return the 32 mb stick and getting two 16 mb sticks instead. It cost me more this way.
