What does A keyboard do for you.

I have a MPC 1000 and Im thinking about getting an Korg Trition keyboard but what does it do. Cant u just use the MPC 1000. Most producers use a MPC and keyboard. What will the Keyborad help u do.

Well something like the Triton (Fantom, Motif) is full of sounds that you can play and tweak etc to your heart's content. They are nice with an MPC but not always necessary. I'm using Reason and a midi keyboard (a keyboard with no sounds itself but it is used to control the mosules in reason).

A lot of people will lay down there drums and samples with the MPC then add in a bass line etc with the keyboard.

Personally though, i'm not going to bother with another keyboard like the Triton as they have a sequencer and sampler that i probably wouldnt use.

Go for a rack mount version like the Fantom XR and a midi keyboard instead, more expandable and you're not wasting money on features you might not need. Or Even Reason 3.0 and a midi keyboard, a hell of a lot cheaper and with loads of flexibility

Oh, and never buy something if you don't know what it is or what it can do for you!

What are the names and prices of the Keyboards you recommened. Didnt u say the Phantom.

Check out the E-MU PK-6 it goes for under 400 bucks and easy to use and u can add ROMS to it for more sounds. I have a link to one that is one Ebay im not sellin it but thats jus in case u want one cause they are hard to get some times. I love it though i use it wit my 2k and everything works great.

a keyboad allows u to play keys chords etc . get a 88 key fully weighted keyboard if u want to get the most out of ure axe. yamaha kx88, roland a80 a90 are some good keyboards u can get used

Thanks. So keybords are used to add basslines and things like that.

You can 'spread' (not sure of the technical term) a sample accross the keys. Depending on how tonally aware you are this could be majorly helpful.

And also, obviously, for bass.

u can use a keyboard for drums, bass lines, ne thing really. plucked stringed instruments guitar especially are difficult to play on the keyboard for me .

zoning is the term whre u spread out a sample across keys. or u assign a certain group of keys (a zone) to a specific midi channel where a different instrument is played for each specific zone

i pull out the keyboards when i wanna make cheesy, commercial, popular sh*t. But thats just cause i cant really get nice, i cant play piano ya dig. So i make simple melodies and small minded fans eat it up


i use samples when i make real hip hop.

not saying you cant make real hip hop with keys, but i cant cause i suck

honestly i wanna give a different perspective on this. i just recently bought a 2000xl cause i have an ASR-10 keyboard and all it has ever done is cause me headaches and i am not gifted on the keys , but a beatpad just feels so much more right and comfortable.. if i want key chords i can get themon a disk and use them as i feel on an mpc..but im a drums n horns guy anyway..anyyway the point is only sink the cash into a keyboard if you feel its necessary. no sense the board and the money going to waste if you aint gonna use it[/b]

word. I usually do the same shit. with midi i bang out beats real fast . just keep playing random notes - once you find 3 or 4 notes that go good together thats it. its amazing how much some people feel that simple garbage.
sometimes If i make a sampled beat i like i might use midi drum kit for a clean sounding cymbal or some small detail sh*t.

Thanks Juxt. But n the MPC manual it talks about MIDI Clock. What the heck is that?

I'm not sure about what midi clock means.
i assume it just means that the midi keyboard and mpc communicate with eachother so everything is going on at the same time and everything is on point.
i dont know if what im sayin is even right. The only way i learned sh.t is to just do sh.t.
