Okay Lets say you have your sample all set up and all but it dosent end at the end of the bar insted in the middle, how do you erase the rest of the empty space that isnt being used? Because when its in song mode theres a gap between Intro and Verse. Understand me? I have OS2.10

you need to trim it - in other words, 'cut' the part of the sample you don't want...

change the number of bars in the sequence to fit your sample.

I'm having the same dillemna. Yesterday was the first day I actually sat down in front of my new MPC and said I was gonna try and solve this problem, but I was never able to get around it. My sample isn't 4 whole bars, so there's this pause at the end of the sequence. Pauses at the beggining was easy cause you just have to "move" the sample and slide it over, but at the end is the hardest part. You can't change the bars, because taking away a bar would cut out part of the sample...adding a bar adds more silent space.

I tried cutting by going to sequence edit in the trim section and highlighting the empty space, and then pressing 'delete'. This didn't work, you can't delete when there's nothing there. All I really want is for the sample to play for the duration it exists, I don't want the extra half a bar there. With that pause I can't loop the sequence.

As far as tempo change, if you change the tempo you either speed up or slow down the sample. In my hours and hour spent on trying to fix this, it seems to me the only way to get rid of the pause is to do trial and error with the tempo BEFORE recording the sample into your sequence. Just guess at the tempo and if the sample doesn't "fit" then start over, adjust, and try again.

This seems kind of tedious, though, and I can't help but think there's a better way.

Normally I don't like asking questions, I'm a big believer in that you attain the most satisfaction and knowledge by figuring it out yourself, but since I was able to come up with some kind of an "answer", even if it doesn't feel like it's the best one, I thought I'd post it. Also, hopefully I clarified what this guy's talking about.

If anyone on this board can point out a better solution, I'd appreciate it, but if you don't I'll still be here, plugging away on my mpc until I solve this problem.

sounds like yall need timestretch in your life

stretch the sample to fit.
User avatar

nah

By Re: Mon Mar 13, 2006 7:16 pm
that ain't it, smoove. The sample is already stretched out just how I want it. I don't want it any longer or any shorter. I just want to record it (done), loop it, and throw some drums over the loop. But those last two things are impossible with that pause at the end of the sample. I don't know how everyone else didn't run into this problem, it's like people jumping off a bridge and never hitting anything. Maybe it's something simple I just ain't seeing, but considering I spent like ten hours just trying shit, it's especially frusterating for something a simple as getting rid of the silent half of a second after a sample.

if there's anyway to know how long to timestrecth it before hand so that it fits inside 4 bars with a tempo of 120, and then change the tempo afterwards, that might work. I'll try it, just don't know if there's a way to timestretch it for that exact amount of time. I know how to timestretch, but knowing just how much is problematic. Seems like more trial and error to me, and at least with the other way I mentioned you don't have to open up any more windows, or wait for the timestretch to load every time you try it over again.

why would slowing the tempo of your sequencer change the pitch of your sample? that sounds more like TUNING instead of changing the tempo. Changing the TEMPO on your sequence should not affect the pitch of your sample. You either need to speed up your sequence a bit or stretch the sample more. i dont see any other way around it....

I want to thank you for replying so quickly.

Pitch ain't the problem, it's length. Timestretching changes the length, and I already used to timestretch to get at the tempo and length I want. It's ready for looping and drums, I chopped it up exactly how I want it. Now you can imagine the frusteration of sampling a two second part, stretching, chopping it, eq'ing, adding effects, rearranging, cutting, and pasting, getting it to sound exactly like you had it in your head, loving the way it sounds, only for there to be a silent half a second at the end. I want to keep the sample how it is and get rid of that half a second.

This ain't even about one specific sample, really. I've run into this problem repeatedly. I banged out a drum loop from scratch many times and it's not a full even amount of bars. I don't want to slow it down or speed it up, it sounds ill as it is. It's a persistant problem.

sounds like the best way is to **** with the tempo amount beforehand. Just keep playin your pads and adjusting the tempo on the main page until the loop is exactly 2 bars, or 4 bars, or whatever. When you find a tempo # that fits (usually for me its around 35), record.

wait cause im confused...what mpc are you using??

you record as slow as 35bpm??

I have the mpc 4000, the tempo on the main page is set to 120, I found out when you slow that down to around 35 the metronome click falls every half bar, like a snare. Unorthodox, I know, but thats what I'm working with.
