I make mostly Digi Dancehall. I hate turning on my cpu at all during writing and only use it for recording. I started small and just upgraded/traded slowly my gear one piece at a time

I'd like to get a good compressor under $400 for tracking drums. Any suggestions?

I guess that's what happens when a hobby gets out of control...i'd like to get a good synth, and cello if i ever have the funds, but I'm happy with my current setup. I would get rid of some of the stuff if i wasn't such a pack rat.

I totally feel that, I'm the same way.

Im still trying to find the perfect setup so that I can jam for an hour with no pc then turn it on just to record once I got something hot.

What I'd really like is a mixer with 8 direct outs, post-eq pre-fader. That would solve that problem...

sleeper get an allen+heath mixwizard, imho the best compact mixer, you won't believe the difference this shit will make on your sounds... everything's top notch!:-)

Which model(s) have u tried?

I'd like one at the small end; looking at that 12:2 . Still checking if those direct outs are pre/post eq/fader; guess I'll d/l the manual...

ps. would you rate it as much better sound than the Mackie Onyx? How about various Soundcraft models?

Nice, those direct outs do look perfect....

In these days of home recording I wonder why you have to get relatively high-end gear just to get some proper direct outs, is everyone else just going straight to their A/D inputs from their gear, and monitoring via digital??

If the Yamaha MG series had direct outs I'd be happy enough to cheap out and go that route

Thinking about getting Reason 3.0 for sound modules and synths

I love it...

i haven't heard the onyx, but i hear there's problems with the outs, i'm not sure if just the firewire, but tehy're PRE EQ and pre fader, which really was a bummer to me, i though that would be a REALLY cool mixer if it had post EQ...

and they keep talking about how cool it is...the perkins EQ... I Don't know...

I fiddled with it at guitar center trying to get a handle of it's sturdiness, n how it is, but I really found the faders to be dissapointing, i'm so used to the 100mm faders on the allen+heath that the little mackies just don't do it...

allen+heath is made really nice, iw as lucky i foudn one locally oncraigs list for $500!:-) on ebay they're like $650, but i think definately worth it. and remember these aren't behringers so you CAN buy them used!;-) i have absolutely ZERO problems with this. completely noise freee,m the sliders are grade a...

I liked it so much that Ibought myself for a dj mixer the xone 02, love that one too, amazing quality!:-) ( I shoulda realy bought the nexto ne up with the analog filter tho...doh!:-), i like cuttin shit up anyway so this hsit's perfect...)

oh yea btw, for what it's worth if i didn't find a cheap A+H, i was looking at the soundcraft m12....

I hear the soundcraft aren't as good as the A+H, but they're a step up of mackie, mackie's kinda like behringer, a dirty word in the pro audio world:x

sleepers, i think its because there's 2 huge markets, the amateur hobbyist, and the pro/more knowledged hobbyist, the amateur one is the huge one. a lot of em just monitor on software(many pros do too tho...), but unless u got a killer card a killer DAW controller, it's lame as ****:p without a killer card, enjoy some latency bitchez!:-)

word. i don't need my sound going thru a whole extra A/D->D/A just so I can hear it and in all my fav old-school techno tracks, i can practically hear their hands dragging the faders and eq's... so i need that hands on approach.
