Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000

What up ya'll, I wanted to know how could you be able to create that real time swing without it having that Robotic feel to it. I know there's ways of you doing it manually and I know there's way of doing it in the time screen menu where you change the swing percentage numbers and the amount numbers. I know it all depends on what type of Bpm's I might be using for a certain beat but I wanted to establish a certain feel that I know everybody has heard before within these certain producers music(Example: J Dilla, Pete Rock, Madlib). I know some of them probably mastered the shit where they can play in real time, some might have sampled some swing rhythms, and even knew how to manipulate the hi hats, tamborines, and other sounds thru the timing screen menu. If anybody knows somethin on how to construct and create that certain swing pattern feel holla at me for real.

i think u answered your own question.....play it yourself w/o quantize, use the swing function/time shift, sample some drums w/ swing feel that your tryin to get...yup

I did that before and certain joints came out good then there were other beats where it still sounded robotic ass hell. It basically at times didn't have that certain feel I wanted. I know there's gotta be a way to use the timing screen menu option where they display swing percentange and amount numbers to establish that certain sound?

i'd have to agree with the minsk, try sample a hi-hat loop and then put your drums over that (quant or non quant)

I have had heaps of success recently with quantize turned off - put your own natural swing into it!

quantize is the robot

My ideas on this:

you can get a solid "hiphop/funk" groove with the quantize on your drums on 16ths, and the swing between 55% and 65% (depends on how much swing you want)

Most madlib tracks dont only have the 16ths swinging, but usually the 8ths are later too. so, first set your timing to 8th - 55% swing (or something like that, not too wild), and play everything you want on the 8ths. then set the timing to 16ths and the swing you want (try it out a little) or leave the timing of completely, and fill in the 16th notes you want.

and this one is nice too:
1. set the timing to 8th - swing = about 55% and play the kick on "1", and the hihats on "2" and "4". this will give you a pretty strange swing already.
2. either turn off the timing and play your snares a little "early", or set the timing to straight 8s, play the snares, and set them earlier in the step editor. The Kankick timing :)

i think it also has something to do with the drums you're using. i have lots of shakers and those by themselves make tracks sound like they have that kind of feel

you can go into step and place certain snare etc where you want as well.this helps alot.
also make sure you put some snares on the "&" beat.(like 1 & 2 & etc.)
another thing is go into step and turn those snares down a bit.you can also turn the tunning up on these snares up a bit and this helps as well.
