Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000
By LateArrival101 Tue Mar 14, 2006 8:33 am
hi guys...

i was watching this little video Pete Rock did for Akai in which he makes a beat with his black mpc2000xl (i saw it on youtube.com).
http://youtube.com/watch?v=z73CcodfT_w&search=pete%20rock%20mpc

anyways...
check this out:

if i sample a break or something and it loops perfectly after i set the bpms, if i were to speed up the bpms as it is playing, it will start overlapping of course (and if i slow it down too much it will have a gap before the sequence repeats.

now...when Pete Rock was doing this (changing the bpms), all the samples were still on time. the samples were adjusting to the speed of the bpm. the audio itself would speed up or slow down so that everything was still playing smoothly. it wouldn't overlap OR have a gap in between.

how do i do that?
is it a setting or something?

I beleive he chopped the sample into 16 pieces - this way you can change the bpm, there are topics on this in the forum

as you can see in the beginning of the video he chopped the sample into 16 parts. so the samples ARE overlapping but since a new one starts every second quarter note you won't really recognise it....

so you brek the overlap into 16 parts. hmmm. this will definitely help.

?
:?

i'm still kinda confused.

i mean...even if he chopped into 1million parts...wouldn't it still OBVIOUSLY be overlapping if u sped it up or slowed it down a LOT (like HE did)?

i'm buggin out right now :-(

No, because the next slice would be starting over the tail of the last sample. The slices would be overlapping, but the whole piece would not.

Fade is right, but this would only work if the pads are set up correctly to do this.

You have to set each pad to "MONO". It will be set to "POLY" by default. This prevents the sample from overlapping.

damn...i feel retarded.

i still can't understand it.

lol...

i mean...i get the chopping thing (where would u do that anyways)...
but i guess it just be way more understandable visually, ya know?

wait...

poly and mono have to do with it overlapping...poly meaning when u hit the pad 3 times the sample will overlap.

and mono if u hit the pad again and again it just restarts the sample right?

Shift + Program > then hit the pad you want the sample assigned to > select the sample you want > Hit F3(I think), which ever one is "Parameters" > Change it from POLY to MONO.

mono only cuts off the same pad...it doesnt cut off the next pad or any other pad so it wouldnt prevent overlapping on the whole sample

True. Forgot about that. From what I noticed, Pete's chops were all on either consistant 1/8th notes or consistant 1/16th notes. Im sure that has alot to do with it as well. Im gonna experiment with this when I get home.

ok let me help ya then go into the manual and do some serious bonen up aight,
when he sped it up it isn't overlaping cause the samples are set to mono. he may have some of em set to mute of each other as well. (do this my hittin open window while on mono in the prg screen)
now here is the part i don't think your gettin.
when he speeds up the seq (wich is 16 pieces chopped up and played every other 16th note) they actually are just being played faster.
now since its set up on mono and also maybe some mute off's it will sound as though its not overlapping (depending on how much faster you go don't go from 80 bpm to 98) however it will be cutting some of the samples off.... but you barely notice when its in a full sequence do to the drums being there also...

got it?.... read up in the manual or do like most of us and stay pn your mpc and think of ways to get around the problems ya havin.... it's all in the force.

Actually his pads are NOT set to MONO and they are NOT set to mute each other. Their is no need to change pad settings when u chop samples into pieces that small...

The reason they play so perfectly is because before he zoned it into 16 peices he had it LOOPING PERFECTLY then he zoned the loop into 16 pieces.
