what's up fellow head nodders? hoping someone out there in MPC land can help me out.

i was messing around w/ my 1000 last night and had a snare sample that was a little soft in volume. so, i doubled up the sample into one pad. i played around w/ it afterwards and noticed that it did not sound clean each and everytime i hit the pad.

sometimes it souded crisp and then every couple of triggers it sounded like it had some kind of effect applied to it (sort of filtered, but sounded more like when you take doubles of the same record and play them at the exact same place and speed on 2 turntables and put your crossfader in the middle and slightly mess w/ the pitch of one of the turntables to create that echo-ish effect. all the DJs out there should know what i'm talking about).

what can i do to correct this and make a doubled-up/layered sample sound clean and crisp? hit me up if you have any suggestions. thanks for taking the time to read this. peace

to make a sample louder, don't double it. either adjust the velocity, adjust the volume, or normalize it.

stacking the same sound on top of each other causes phasing, which is pretty ugly. you don't want that.

It SHOULD increase the volume, but apparently it doesn't always trigger simultaneously, which is what causes the phasing. Any time two directly opposite signals play simultaneously, they cancel each other out. Which can sometimes sound cool and sometimes sound like your gear is ****.

You dont want it to trigger simultaneous you want it to be slightly of cause if it triggers simultaneously "then" you will get phasing. But that only happens if your using the same sound

nah sorry, you're wrong there mate. if you play the exact same wav file over the top of itself, you will get no phasing, just an increase in volume. the phasing sound only occurs when waveforms are out of sync with one another.

actually fuc dat, i'm wrong there. what you get if you play the exact same sample slightly out of sync is a delay/chorusy effect. the phase effect makes the second waveform go in and out of phase with the first, thereby creating the swirly spacey effect.

Phasing appears as identical waveforms playback with a timedifference. Depending on the time difference the effect of the phasing will be less or more pronounced. If the two waveforms happen to play so one of them reaches its lowest peak and the other one reaches its highest peak in the same "wavemotion" they more or less cancel each other out, leaving you with no sound or a sound with a dramaticaly lesser volume.
People with graphic audio editors can make two tracks with identical sinuswaves in each, zoom in and start move them around. Makes it really easy to understand to mess with it and see the waves while experiencing the sound alterations.

No identical waveforms played simultaneous will cause phasing. Your MPC is not sample accurate and thereby causing tiny time diffs.

I mean I do tha shyt all the time. The same thing happens when u spin two identical records at the exact same time on two turntables. It like phases in and out. THat happens when u play two records at the exact same time. Try it...

Now play two snares at the exact same time on the mpc or two kicks at the exact same time on the mpc. It happens just the same...

trust me i know what you're talking about. you could only play them exactly in sync if they were mechanically linked. you say yourself they eventually fall out of sync. the sound you hear before that is the falling. ie, the first beat may well be exactly in sync, but for it to get to being out of sync after 20seconds, it has to get gradually further and further out of sync. it happens in a linear way, it doesnt just suddenly drop out of sync.
