Hollow is not the issue I think, as the hollowness of the panels is not required to accommodate any 'bumpiness' of the sides. They could be solid and do the trick as well. The real issue is the tiny screw holders that could never be carved out of wood with the same design.
Still thinking bout it anyhow...
