Then we will have identical sounds and can listen for the timing.

now that's a good idea. then you could put the wav files alongside one another in wavelab or something, and see how tight they are.

phase invert one and check for cancellation..

Good idea. I'll sequence some drum samples i have loaded in my fantom.

excellent idea! this should provide silence if the timing is exactly the same, right?

in theory.

here are the files. I used some stock sounds from my fantom-s. I thru both in dp and they line up practically perfect. Not sure if i'm flipping the phase right but i didn't hear any cancellation.

sweet.

i wouldn't expect to hear silence because its been shown that the 1k/2.5k timing engine is not perfectly sample-accurate from bar to bar, anyway. and the 60's probably aint either.

however if the two files line up tightly that seems like one strike against that 'mpc 60 has a magical swing' theory :P

I think the legendary feel of the 60 has been debunked as nothing more than folklore and nostalgia for the days of yesteryear.

after listening a bit i can def hear a diff between the two grooves.

The fact that the phasing itself phases (i.e. it is not a static out of phase sound that could result from identical tracks being not lined up) tells me that the two resulting grooves are different.

They are hard to tell apart, and I may be fooling myself, but I think I like #1 better.

I think number 1 is the 60, and number 2 is the 2500. number three is both. 8)

i can hear a differance in groove. its very slight.

Are the default durations and velocities the same?

Im thinking 2 is the 2500

it also seems like the kick durations of the two are slightly differant

you can tell that the swing is slightly different because the swinging kicks phase differently than the snare, which is very tight between the two. but you can hear the kicks flamming a little more, so the swing is slightly different, but very close.
