All kinds of shit...Get a portable turntable and listen to everything...You can find some ill samples on stuff you would least expect to! Don't be too picky...Keep your mind open...

i used to get the oldest and most odd shit .
now i like to get shit from the 80s.
i find it easier to work with newer samples, and Ive been lazy lately.

But overall (if you don't know the record), just judge it by its cover(front, and back of record) , if you wanna get deeper into it -see if there is album info inside. sometimes it has lyrics, instruments used, images.

ha ha ha. i have a hard enough time without a turntable. It seems like everytime i dig thru records i get bombarded with noise and distraction. Like today i went to a thrift shop, and i was in a room alone for a couple of minutes, then 2 old spanish speaking ladies and a little kid are there screaming, sitting in a chair right beside me, blasting spanish TV. The kid kept running away from them and they would start going nuts, one lady just walked around singing/screaming "love me, squeeze me". With my luck i would get hit with trying to steal a turntable too

mainly covers that intrigue me right away, familiar artists, familiar session players, good lables, crazy themes: moog records, spoken word ish,...
Most interesting are those LPs that look like your old uncle Jerry was responsible for the artwork and pressing: Check these LPs out!!! They might be some private shit thats not been heard and used by everone and their momma yet.

of course I have my preferences that I wont share right now, just dont be too scurrrreed to check the next genre's crates. Disco, rock, world (!!!), strange and last but not least the mother of all great finds: THE $-BIN!!

enjoy diggin, im too broke for it atm.. :(

I have pretty specific things I like to sample. Not going to give it away since I've rarely heard anyobdy else sampling the shit as much as I do or will.

But lately I've been looking for certain labels and musicians. CTI esp.

Into a lot of Jazz at the moment

labels

year

familiar names

found 2 ronnie laws in the 50 cent stacks

didnt even know they were blue notes until i took a closer look

pressure sensitive had the sample for "whogotdaprops"

hard to say what to look for

just take your time

look at the record for the dark grooves as they usually signify a break (not just drums but solos)

but yeah man nothing beats taking your time

if u look at what i got in my crates its totaly weird shit, i havent been diggin for too long but ive never bought something familiar or popular in that case... i try to get the weirdest/lamest looking shit that nobody would cop and work with it.. check out my soundclick and youll hear tons of shit i used other than one or two tracks up there i doubt any samples are anywhere near recognizable..but yeah summers comming and ima get back in the swing of diggin hardcore so i just wanted to see what everyones look was about. keep them replys comin!

i usually look for artist, year, musicians, instruments, lable, cover and genre and the degree of fame of the artists and of course for everything that looks ill and weird...

ill buy everything aslong as its not expensive... i wont buy a hot sampling record if its more then 10 bucks.... if it costs that much inhere, its too well known. i like to sample stuff that nobody knows. french chansons for example are nice! 8) .. the thing is I dont look for drums anymore on records, i try to find obscure sounds when i go digging.
.. digging is 50% luck .... if not more ...
