Discuss the various methods you use in music production, from compressor settings to equipment type.

This doesn't apply as much to this particular technique but really comes in handy for reverbs and delays which are very cpu intensive. For example if you have a vocal with four overdubs(I like thick vocals) and want to apply a nice reverb or delay to all five tracks you can just send all of em' to an aux track with a reverb plug in instead of running five reverbs which would really tax your system performance.

you get more control routing to a Bus and applying the effect on the bus. or perhaps you might like to return that aux to its own channel.... that way you can set the reverb to 100% wet and control the amount via the return channel fader.

we use ducking a lot in broadcast as you can imagine.

exactly, thats how i learned it. just now gettin in to it with the music side. i try to do it very subtley cuz i aint trying to slam it like in broadcast. but i am thinking it helps the drums punch thru a bit.

speaking of drums, what kinda path do you guys use for them. aside from individual eq on the kik, maybe some on the snare and hihat, and compression directly on the snare and kik, i like to route all the drum elements thru an aux with a nice comprssor on there. that way i get an extra puchy drum set and once i get the overall levels right for each sound in relation to the others, i only have to ride one fader for all the drums.

what do you guys do?

I like to do some minimal , mix/compress/eq steez on the individual drums, and like you said, then run them thru a master drum aux, with the outputs of each sound sent directly via bus to that aux. The Fairchild 660 is sick on that, or is it FairLIGHT 660? Anyway, vintage compressor plug in, very little control, very dope sound. I'm feeling this plug for alot of apps. Like the drum master thing, vocals, even on the whole mix when the L+1 Ultramax isn't grimy enough. Right now, I'm feeling the 660 even more than the Bombfactory vintages.

So, with ducking...do you suggest a similar technique as the one I asked about at the top of the thread (key inputs, etc)? Similar concept?

yeah man, thats pretty much the way i do it, i like cooocooo1s way too. there are so many ways to skin a horse in recording.
