(re)buying MPC1000 for live work

Hey everyone
I'm sure this has been covered before, but I've been out of things here for a while.

Basically, I'm trying to decide whether to get a 1000 again for live work. I say again, because I bought one when it came out and had to sell it pretty much straight away since it kept crashing.
I see that loads of new O/S's have come out now though, and on paper it is still the only machine that'll do what I need (ie allow me to improvise beats and midi sequences alongside pre-arranged patterns, record loops on the fly, switch between tracks without pausing etc).

What I really need to know, would people describe it as absolutely 100% rock solid now?? Generally I'd be working it live for 2+ hours, and need to be absolutely certain that it won't crash on me!

Any advice or reports from people who use it in a similar situation would be much appreciated. Thanks!

I may be lucky but I have never had an issue with my mpc that would make it seem like it was a faulty machine

pads are good - all buttons are good - no crashes - no glitches that I have found in about a year of use.

the pads are gonna lose sensetivity no matta what tho. wich has not slowed me down eitha.


should be good to go - I have read numerous articles about the mpc being used for live use.

i use mine live, i'm running an instrumental set off of it and a number of other things this summer.

as for the pads, they can be fixed.

it's great live, and it's never crashed while simply playing back samples on me.

ive only noticed one potential problem::

on the last OS if i overdubbed a bunch of different tracks in a row, all without ever stopping the sequencer, the mpc would eventually start to act weird and lose functionality

because of that, i make sure to stop/play the sequencer once in a while and it hasn't happened since

and i have never actually observed the problem with the latest os, but that could be because i still do my 'stop the sequencer' workaround.

with os2.10 mine crashes after a certain amount of idle time, sometimes out of no where and sometimes while i'm saving. i went back to 1.07 because it was impossible to get any work done with the new os crashing all the time... but it seems like it hapeens to me more so then to others..

just my two cents... i have an original 1k with just a 512 mb sandisk cf card and 128mb akai exm upgrade

i wonder if the black one has the same problems ?

actually now it crashes with 1.07 when i go from record mode back to the main page... this is really horrible.

I've come across this problem.....otherwise even with the new OS, rock solid.

Thanks for the advice everyone. It really seems to be down to the individual unit - mine would do exactly what shaythamc describes, freeze up when switching modes and then just crash randomly on top of that. But other people I know never had that problem...

I guess I'll have to just take the risk. Does anyone use theirs live running lots of midi gear as well as samples? I'll be using it as a drum sampler but also driving a couple of synths over loads of channels at the same time....

my honest advice, as someone who uses his live 3 nights a week.

the 1000 is not durable! so treat with care. learn to press buttoms softly (whilst being quick)

the new OS is not ideal for live play, in terms of pressing stop start repeatedly to make live intros, it just does not respond quick enough so stick to 1.07.

an instrumental set. i perform my beats using all my instruments at the same time. all my songs have like pages of notes as to what sound is where. i have an sp404, mpc1000, radium 49, now an mpd, a laptop, a mic for beatboxing, and 2 turntables w/ ssl all in front of me to play live. control my stuff from them.

hey... this mourning i removed the exm ram upgrade just to see if it would make any difference... it hasnt froze since... it might pull something sneaky but i think it was just the ram maybe it became defective or something after alot of use because there was nothing like this happening when i got the unit... just thought i would let u know...

if you put in the time i think the 1000 can be great machine for live use (in its own way). there's enough features available in the new OS to really make it a worthwhile machine. of course it's still great for just muting/unmuting sequences and samples.

that said, i just got rid of my 1000 this morning. nice machine, but i need to try something different. had a 2000xl for years and almost immediately regretted selling it last year. of course when i got my tax money this year i rushed out and bought a shiny new black 1000. turned out to be sort of like hooking up with an old girlfriend. everything's all nice and exciting for the first week, then you realize why you split in the first place. nice machine though, might grab one again some time. used for sure. sadly though, instead of the pads double triggering like on the 2000xl, on the 1000 sometimes you'll get three or four successive notes. and most of the buttons still feel cheap and are prone to 'falling'. on mine they didn't even line up evenly with the case, same with the knobs. heavier and more solid than i thought it'd be though. feels sturdy, great size for live setups.

ahhhh!!!! thank you for recognizing that!!!!! you're the first person who did, and it speaks volumes about your literacy. i LOVE that book on tape. especially because there's this once quote in there where a coworker says something like "there are not only the synonyms...there are also the Antonyms...what is the use of a work which means the opposite of the original?"

i'm just waiting to use that on a track...anyway, thanks a lot for the kind works.
