your batteries may be dead. i thought i fried my speak & read. then i read that dead batteries will make it seem like it's fried. so i put the dead batteries in my unbent speaks and they acted all weird too. as soon as i replaced the batteries, i was good to go, and added 3 more bends to my speak & read.

hahahabro if I can work out how to bend I can work out how to change the batteries!!!!! just had a quick look then, the solder join on my reset switch is fkt so theres no power goinng to em....
I've got one of the very first speak n spells sitting there untouched and they are supposed to be the best to bend so I might have to get into it again

the radio shack reset switches (NC) suck. so avoid them if you can.

btw, i read about the old pushbutton speak & spells. supposedly they sound different from the later models. i have a link somewhere with all the different versions of the speaks.
