hey yall, this prolly isn't anything new for most, but i haven't seen any posts on this and i'm really digging this technique so i thought i'd share it for those interested...

with the new os you can set your samples to change start position based on pad velocity, so if your velocity is 1 it plays closer to the end and 127 plays from the start. with the sample set to play note-on and the Start Vel -> to 100, and Vel Level -> 0 (press window button from level of program mode to get there).

go into 16 level velocity mode and you can start your sample at 16 different points without any chopping required!

you can get pretty interesting randon shig going on using the note repeat button (helps to ad some decay), and if you have a controller that can set the velocity of a note you can fine tune the start position (than you get with the 16 level mode).
i use my rm1x for playing a specific velocity of a sample, and get some pretty interesting results doing this using the arp and midi delay with increased (or decreased) velocity for the delay with the rm1x.

there's obviously a few drawbacks to this, like you can't really use the velocity for affecting volume, and 16 level mode doesn't always hit the spots you want, which actually can help with creating unquantized loose timing, but it's crazy easy and quick to do, doesn't use up additional sample space or increase the number of samples im memory, and you can have a single program filled with samples that can be used this way.

hopefully that made some sense.
happy velocity chopping!

Yea, but it's new for the 1000 though :)

Great tip, thanks for sharing that.

u should try it without 16levels on, its lush, virtually granular synthesis, esp. if u have the quantise very fine and note repeat on, just squeeze the pad slowlyup n down in varying pressures gets mad tech stuf.

Trying to figure out other ways to use this method of chopping! You are kind of limited to what the velocity level gives you on the pads. If you change the start number it moves around the sample..I going to try to see if you can use the slider to see if that can also do the same thing, but with more detail. Really want to see if i can get more control over using this method. Say a couple parts of the chop is off the only way to edit the chop is through step edit. with the 16 level you are only given the default numbers for each pad. Although will have to see if there is a possible way to change the defaults on each pad to what you want, instead of what is given.

since 1k has better more chopping tools than older mp's, dont bother with this too much. just use it for what it was intended. it adds a nice touch to drums and hats especially. 60/3k users can use it to make the pads more sensitive, but 1k pads are light as a sheet of paper already..

yea!
take any melody, like a trumpet, set note repeat to 32/3! pretty cool effect with some decay or attack and lightly press the pad while using the slider for filter sweeps.
Trumpets on crack ahoy!

you can also fine tune the recorded velociy level with the track velocity adjustment.

?!?! bulls**t. (unless you're just speaking for yourself, can't tell really.) this is far more than just chopping or 'to make the pads more sensitive'. also, it's done in real-time. though real-time modulation of the start and end points by use of the sliders would be better, this is a great feature that is probably the most under-used on the whole machine. though with the velocity scale difference since the upgrade it might not be as smooth. i used to have some great examples of this technique on vocals samples posted to one of my Soundclick pages, but i think i took them down. that was on my 2000xl when i had it, i even made a patch on my G2 that sent midi note-on and velocity data to the MPC to control it.

Yeah thanks for posting this... so simple but i never thought of doing it, i never used 16 velocity function much but will much more from now on.
Just used this to chop up a guitar loop. I love the randomness, I used to do the same the with recycle. You have all these chops then just pick a few that sound nice together, and get funky!
Cheers.

also as above, using note repeat, and squeezing the pad for varying velocity curves is good, but just record a few tries, stopping the seq each time u got a good take. then try more, cos u can always 'undo ' the last duff try if its no good, just keep building mad patterns.

even in step edit, u can scroll down to any event in particular, press the 'play' Fkey, and tweak the value 'till its right, dead easy by my standards.

is there a way to do this on a 4000 ?

try it. not sure if the setup is exactly the same on the 4000, but on the 1000/2000xl you go into (i believe) the sample edit mode and hit the 'window' key when on the amp envelope page. this lets you set the % of the effect velocity has on pitch, volume, and sample start point. best to put pitch and volume to 0% and start point to 100% to start out.

might be another way to do it through the main screen as well?
