midi keyboard hooked to the mpc2kxl

HI

What do you people use for settings? I'm basically having a conflict attempting to record different midi tracks. Does it matter what 1a-Deive-01 it's on? When scroll down to the Track menu on the MPC interface I got under S:MIDI turned on. and my PGM set to off. It seems like there's a confusion between my keyboard and wht sounds it's transmitting to the mpc.. can anybody help me out with midi keyboard to mpc configuration. Thanks

Are you sending Midi from the MPC back to the keyboard or out to a module?
The "1a-Device-01" tells the MPC where to send the Midi data. Ignore the "Device-01" part for the moment (it's just there to name your midi devices). The "1" in the "1a" is the Midi Channel and the "a" in the "1a" is Midi out port A on the back of the MPC.

If you have your Midi on the MPC set to "1a-Device-01" connect a midi lead to Midi port A to the Midi in on your keyboard/Module. Set the Midi receive to channel 1 on the keyboard/module. Also make sure "Local off" is set if your sending Midi back to a keyboard.

If your using the Keyboard to trigger the sampler on the MPC just select one of the 4 Drum banks and leave the Midi off.

Thanks that further helped increase my knowledge. But, do you have any clue as to why I get two simultaneous sounds? Like when I tap the keyboard I sometimes get two instruments. Like a bass and a string. Sometimes it plays my drum samples back on the keyboard from the mpc.

It's hard to answer this without knowing what kind of keyboard you have as the problems your having with the simultaneous sounds have more to do with your keyboard's setup rather than the MPC setup.

The reason your getting drum sounds sometimes is the MPC's sampler is being controlled by your keyboard. Just set your track to Midi as opposed to one of the four drum Banks. Remember that the MPC can play a drum track and a midi channel at the same time on the same track. You just have to tell it not to.

thanks for answering. I have a Yamaha psr-160 model, which to say the least is the bare minimum as midi keyboards get. No talkback interface. I got what your saying. However how do you record multiple tracks to the mpc sequencer? I can record one, then if I want to layer another track with a different instrument, it totally affects the previous track. It's like making a drum loop but I can't add anything to it because the drum sounds will turn into those instruments. Appreciate it

Hmm. The PSR 160 receives on eight channels:

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 10. The MIDI transmit
channels are fixed to the following data:
Ch. 1 : Keyboard, harmony
Ch. 2 : Bass
Ch. 3 : Chord
Ch. 4 - 7 : Other
Ch. 10 : Rhythm

Thee's no Local off as far as I can see. This is a problem. When you have local off set it gives control of the synth to the MPC which is what you want. But your Keyboard without local off will try to control the MPC .

One thing you could try is turning on the Midi input filter.
This stops the MPC from receiving certain data. You can access the page by hitting open window when S:MIDI is highlighted. Go down to Midi input filter and turn it on. Then go down to Type and scroll until you find Program change and where it says Pass to the right and select NO. Go back to Type and scroll to Exclusive and select No in the pass.

It still isn't ideal. The PSR 160 wasn't really designed to be used like this..
But it is Multi Timbral (capable of playing more than one program at a time) to a certain extent. As long as you stick to the MIDI channels above you should be able to play more than one sound.

Remember each track needs its own output to the keyboard. So track 1 is 1a-device-01 and track two will be 2a-device-01 etc. etc.
