Akai MPD-16

I know this aint a 2000xl question, but I dunno where else to put this...

so what's the use of buying just the drumpads? what can they do for me? are they compatible with any sequencer/sampling software? when I hook it up to my pc, can I do everything on it I could do on the mpc?

I couldnt find any info in there about how exactly the mpd will work with software sequencers like acid, and the more advanced shit like cubase, pro tools etc.

cos I wanted to cop an mpc2k, mainly cos I cant be **** to place my beats with mouseclicks, yknow. And I know that with an mpc I'd have to tweak shit thru my PC anyway. Now if the mpd16 meant I could bang any samples (which I'd have to sample with my pc, sure) live into a software sequencer, that'd be the shit!!

That's exactly what it's for. For example, if you insert a soft synth/sampler like sampletank into a Pro Tools track and have the MPD hooked up to your midi interface and configure everything accordingly you can use the MPD to trigger your samples.

ok, this may be a silly question, but I'm not too familiar with midi control, not at all actually..

anyway, could I do the same thing with an MPC as with the MPD? meaning, can I use the mpc as a midi controller to trigger samples in a software sequencer??

cos I still havent decided yet which one I should get.. I figure the mpd would suffice for production for me when I hook it up to the proper software, and above all it's more convenient to carry around than the mpc (I usually jam at a friend's place who is pretty skilled with software).
but I'd really like to play stuff live even if I dont have a pc around, which is why a used mpc seems like a good deal. but still, it'd be dope if I could hook up the mpc to the computer and use it just as an input device for a software seq. is that doable?? or does it only interact with the integrated sequencer?

hey, I'm just gettin started.. I'm a broke cat, so I have to make the rite decisions...

its a midi controller. you can use it in pro tools or anything that accepts vst instuments. I mostly use it in acid. get a vst software sampler (like battery) and that provides your mpc type interface where you assign samples to pads. Most soft samplers have wave type editors of some type for you to chop and modify your loops, or you can do it in a stand alone wav editor. If you get it though, make sure you have a low or no latency sound card. This makes it a little bit tougher to deal with on laptops because latency will be a problem if you don't have a good sound card.

the mpc is sending out midi data (probably the same way as the mpd 16 is doing)...so you can use it to trigger samples on your pc...

I'm not neccessarily a genius, but in my experience with equipment, i think it's safe to say, that a MPC can do any thing that a MPD can do, but a MPD cannot do everything that an MPC can do..... keep that in mind
