mpc wont connect to mac

i'm having serious difficulty getting my mac to recognise my mpc. the mpc says "status-connected" but no harddrive icon appears on my desktop.
this is killing me!! anyone any suggestions?

are you running tiger? if so just look in finder it should appear on the left side under Network and macHD

am running on osx panther.
i've been following the manual word for word and still having problems.
i sent my computer away at first and they replaced the hard drive, still same problems, then they replaced the logic board, still same problems and they now assure me that my computer is in perfect working order.
am freakin out!!

try it on someone else's mac to see if its a problem with the mpc or with the mac.
