The key to learning something is trying it, working with it, see what it does in real life. It´s usually a bit easier if you read something about it first, search on the internet on home recording, mixing, equalization.

But remember, it´s a lot of work before you are learn. My advice is to read and try, read and try.
You might not understand what´s it all about when your reading, but terminology and principles stuck in your head and when you try the eq out it suddenly makes sense what the differnt parameters do.
