Sandisk 512MB card has only 488.5 MB?

anyone know why this is? i just bought one, seems like a big chunk of space for just directories, etc (is that even why?)

I wish i could find the web article I saw that specified the capacity of cf cards, but I am at home and it is bookmarked at work. Suffice to say, the waste is directory structure like you suggest. The only ones that read true are the hard drive cards. The site I speak of was a camera article, gave the transfer speed of data etc. Without a link to the site, I can only speak about what it said. You may be happy to know that all the cf cards reported the same regardless of vendor. It is one of the reasons the microdrive cards had my interest.

funny, i just re-read that post about the microdrive. as it turns out the 512MB CF does not work with the mpc1000. at least not yet anyway.

before doing anything, i formatted it on the mpc. then i hooked up the mpc to my mac (dual gig quicksilver running 10.3.2). it showed up pn the desktop the way the 32MB CF does. i tried copying some samples over but i got an error -36, saying that it wont copy becuase the finder doesnt like it, blah blah.

i then tried dagging the mpc icon to the trash. it wouldnt go so i kept trying to drag it. like maybe 10 times later the icon disappeared and the mac froze.

its a shame bestbuy didnt have any 512 MB fuji CF's. this sandisk one was the only 512 they had.

any tips on getting it to work? (although i think id rather just return it and get one that works from the start like it should)

If you are trying to transfer from Mac to Disk and get this error, how does this tell you that this prticular CF is not compatible with the MPC? Sounds more like an issue between the CF and Mac. I would have tried working with the disk right out of the box before formatting on the MPC. Who knows, the MPC may not formatting it correctly, but that has not been proven yet.

could be, but i think in reality it makes no difference. if i cant get my sounds from my hard drive to the mpc, then the CF card is kind of useless. i know where you're coming from tho, good troubleshooting is always useful.
