SPDIF is the only way to use the 1000!!!!!

How many of you have went from the 4 outs to spdif or vice versa? I'm new to this, plan on using spdif all along but people keep telling me that using the assignable outs will save alot of headaches. I just don't see the point of going digital to analog to digital. Just curious because i haven't read too much about spdif.

this is only for tracking out, when you record all the individual sounds onto your pc for tweaking, mixing, arranging and mastering.

honestly, i don't think it would save a big headache. it'd take 1/2 as long to record all yoru tracks, sure, but the sound quality is less pristine.

i record 2 sounds at a time via spdif by panning 1 way left, the other way right. ie kick/snare in one recording pass. and remember, i usually use a TON of tracks on my mpc, so the entire tracking process could easily take me an hour or so. but it's no big deal. put on some ramen, put on chapelle show or something funny and just walk back and forth. you don't have to be right there when tracking with spdif cuz you don't have to worry about eqing or anything like that. yet.

my advice is to moniter your mpc sound via spdif, track via spdif, and save the assignable outs/main outs for live use.

Yeah, i can see if it had 8 outs using them but i don't think it will save me much time. Well, maybe right now because i'm just beginning and only use 2 to 3 tracks. I'd also have to buy a new sound card and cables so...
I'm actually moniter pretty much straight of my mpc right now, because i run it through a stereo channel on my mixer which is pretty much the same. I have also noticed a slight degrade of quality recording analog but not enough to worry about. I never thought about panning though, that will cut things in half. I'm comming from using Reason where i could easily get up to 15-16 tracks using drums as one track, some of course stereo so everything will be tedious to me regaurdless :lol:

that's a familiar story. i came from reason to the mpc and i was like yo i could do the same shit so much faster in reason...

then i got good at drum programming on the mpc and i'll never ever go back. you'll find that reason is GREAT for some things, but software drum programming will NEVER hold its own against mpc drum sequencing.

i've come to believe that grid edit is a CURSE for drum programming.

but anyway back to spdif - you can really hear the 16 bit, and it's great. i love the sound of digital recordings, particularly 12 bit, mixed with more smooth analog stuff. i like being able to taste the sample rate on my eardrum.

Ah.. just realized I actually have the cables to hook up spdif.. I'mma have to try this.. If only I hadn't nearly finished my record! I guess this just means the next one will sound higher quality. Thanks for the help!

dont sweat it. if you track your stuff out and tweak it in a daw it really doesn't matter if you took it digital or not, you just have to be better at eqing and sht.

I like the clean sound of the SPDIF, however there's a latency from the time you hit the pad til the time you hear the sound.
I stopped using the SPDIF months ago, no regrets.

dahketer - that must be your soundcard settings. i experience no latency.

It's equal opportunity for me. I use all the outputs on my MPC1000. The main analog outs go into my analog mixer for monitoring my beat before tracking. Then I have all four analog outs and the S/PDIF out going into my ADA8000 so I can track 6 channels at the same time. I rarely have more than six tracks in the MPC because I mainly use it for drums and bass, so this gets the job done for me.
