headphones for monitoring

my living situation forces me to monitor my beats on headphones. i am using sony mdr-v600s now, i am afraid my mixes have been a little inaccurate what headphones should i look into? AKGs? thanks.

I havent had the cash for monitors yet so I've been monitoring through headphones too. But, I talked to a pro-audio guy at guitar center and he said that monitoring through headphones(good headphones) is fine--although, most people like to hear their mixes pass through air, so they use monitors. I told him I had AKG K240s and he said those are great for monitoring. Ive had these things for about three years, and they sound awesome. I say go with AKGs.

monitors are speakers, yes. just a pro audio term.

in my opinion, i would try and find a little time to mix outside of your headphones. i dont know your living situation but there has to be at least an hour a day sometime you could get your mix on thru some monitors. it will help a lot.

yes you can mix through headphones with decent results, but i wouldnt suggest it for final mixes. i usually reference a mix thru headphones.

your sonys are a quality pair of headphones. i have used them much in the past and i like the sound. good bass response. but when you listen in headphones you are missing some things and gaining somethings. like you lose the "space" a listen with monitors will give you, and you get a wider perceived stereo image which can mess with your panning. i wouldnt spend more money on headphones but spend time trying to figure out when ou can mix without them.

when making beats i do them on headphones... just the way I'm used to working, since I mainly do my music at like 3am when everyone's sleeping. I used to have these dope DJ headphones called PRO2 PH1000's... they was the illest thing I ever had... they was like home speakers for your ears... wish I never broke them... anyhow, if monitoring on headphones works for you and your mix sounds right then do it partna!

mesh i like your response. and you are right i could find time in the day to mix. i am just not sure how the sonys reproduce sound. if i spend 30min. playing with the filters and attack, decay etc. and then it sounds like crap on monitors i may have wasted my time. with a baby in the house and my goodol' 9to5 i don't have alot of time to remix my beats. what are some good cheap monitors? peace.

what do you mean by cheap? in my mind cheap is $500 a pair where expensive is $2000 a piece. i just got the event tr8 for $450 and i am lovin em. powered and everything.

good point. i have been looking at some in the 250-300 range. alesis mk2, maudio bx5, samson resolv, all active speakers. which in this range?

i guess the alesis, although i havent really heard them, just seen them and heard more about them than the others.

I own the cheap samson which are not bad. But i am looking to up grade I heard the m-audio's which i think is a little better than the samson.I can't remember about the alesis. but my opinion for me is my next set will be in the $500 dollar range either the bigger set of samson or m-audio preferably

As far as your mix goes try taking a break after making the track. If you're doing your track or entire session through earphones your ears will get fatigued. This holds true for recording with monitors too. It is best to either save your mix for the next day or do a ruff mix and come back to it the next day. The big boys (dre, neptunes etc...) actually have people that come in and do the mix for this exact reason. So give your ears a brake then come back and do your mix.

toggle between both so you can make your mix sound good on both!.........like dude said the other day try to get an hour a day where you can put your mix game down thru the monitors.......your beatz will thank you later

I listen to my tracks on every home stereo, car, pa system and crapy cd player i come across. after a while i got to know my headphones (sony mdr 7509) and generaly I get it right most of the time now.
Still panning needs that air u only get from monitors.
