I'd read the manuals if I owned either of these machines...

I've read the 1k manual, I don't have a 1k.
I read it just outta curiosity..

Did you find a highpass filter explained in the 2kxl manual? Probably not, since there is no such thing in the 2kxl, only a lowpass filter.

There is a way to get the effect without a high pass filter. And I'm sure it can be done on the MPC, though I've never tried it.

That is not exactly done on the MPC2kxl since you have to do some processing of your wav file in software.

What does it mean to 'invert' a sample?

If you can't make effective use of the filters in the EB, then either you need a better understanding of filters and frequency or you are just trying to warp the f*ck out of stuff and should be using a Sherman since that's one of the best Filters for just mangling a sound.
The EB can do LP, BP, HP or Notch pretty easily, resonance is a bit tricky.
I can get better results with the EB, than with the Electrix Filter Factory.
The MFC tends to work better than the Electrix in many cases, so it can be a good choice.
The problem with the EB really comes down to Akai doesn't always design things from a normal mentality so it's a little odd at a glance.
Combine that with the routing and not being able to sample though or re-sample through effects and it can box you in.

Hi-pass Filter

Make a handplant and then your Low-Pass sounds like a Hi-Pass Filter.
