Ok so I'm trying to sequence up my Moog rackmount voyager to my mpc 1000 and I can't seem to get a signal into the Akai. I checked all the midi cords and they are functional. I have a alesis photon hooked up to control the moog.

So I have midi out on the moog to the midi in on the mpc, midi out on the mpc to midi in on the photon, have the akai set to midi, pgm is off, midi on the right is set to channel 1, midi send/receive on the moog and photon set to channel 1 and no sound. Is there something I'm overlooking here?

I even tried taking out the photon and hooking the midi out on the mpc directly into the midi in on the moog and still no luck..

Any ideas?

try this

Alesis midi out - mpc midi in

mpc midi out - moog midi in

Set the soft thru to as track and receive channels to all

this is how mine is set up.

First of all, try to reverse your wiring. Get this in / out thing straight as you seem to have connected it all backwards.
I have not used a MIDI controller on the MPC, only with software seq´s, but if I were to hook it up I would connect the Photons MIDI out to the MPC´s MIDI in. The MPC´s MIDI out to the Moog´s MIDI in.
If your internal routing on the MPC is alright and the Moog is receiving on the same MIDI channel you are feeding it you should be alright.

Ok, so I hooked it up the way you said, and I can stil can't get any sound on the headphones with the akai. Although I can hear things on the voyager headphones with either the keyboard or the pads. weird??

yes, that's correct, midi cables do not send any audio. you'll need a mixer.

While sequencing external gear you won´t get the sound synths or modules from the MPC. They are independent sounding units being controlled from the MPC not recorded to the MPC.

Two tips:

First: Read up on the difference between MIDI and audio and the difference between a sequencer and a multitrack recorder.

Second: Get a mixer or learn the input thru function on the MPC and hook the Voyager to MPC inputs.

Gotcha, that was what I was forgetting. I just recorded something and listened back through the voyager headphones. Durr. :)

As I'm sure you can tell I'm a bit Midi challenged. I come from more of a pyschedelic rock background so all this stuff is new to me. Thanks for all the help guys.

It´s good, everybody gotta learn sometime and MIDI is kinda tricky in the begining.
One can see that you think and try before you come to the forums and ask for help, which is a hell of a lot more than many people do around here.
Keep it constructive.

Thanks ryssen. I've lurked for a bit here and have seen what happens when someone posts something like how do I turn my mpc on? :o
