tell me what would you do! i know alot of you guys have protools from what i have read so i ask you this question say that because you had a laptop computer you couldnt get the digi 001 would you get the m-box or would you just get a good sound card with the same amounts of inputs and outputs as the digi 001. i was thinking about getting a layla 24/96 because it has the laptop card bus and has 8 inputs and outputs but the m-box is protools but it has only two inputs....whats means more to you inputs or software.....cause i have a mpc and a motif and this summer ima max out the outputs on the mpc(8) and the motif (8) but i dont really plan to use 16 channels but what would some like you do....please answer even if you dont know at lease say something!

the softaware means more to me than the hardware ...
but keep in mind that u cant use protools unless u have the hardware with it ... as far as your connectivity issues...

u can sync up protools via midi with ur mpc or your motif ..
what this means, if u dont know .. is that u can take one pass of just a kick drum and a snare .. and take another of a hi hat and a shaker and so on.... so only having 2 or 8 ins doesnt really limit how many instruments u can get isolated ...
but obviously the more ins u have the least amount of time its gonna take to track something out ..

Im real close to purchasing a digi 001 myself ... im most familiar with protools ..  now if i was buying a car i would shop around for and look at all the manufacturers .. but protools is more than competent and sooo powerful ...at the end of the day i was just wanna make music ... so for ME protools is the best choice .. do some research and find out whats best for you ..

hope this helps

Yo dog, I use PT with 001.  It works great and I have no complaints with my setup.  Since you using a laptop, its not really an option.  My advice is to check out the Motu 828 which is the same specs as the 001 except its got a firewire hookup.  Since Pro Tools doesnt support third party hardware you will have to use Logic or DP (well, anything but Pro Tools)  I gotta say it: dont get stuck on the Pro Tools name.  It is the industry standard, but that dont mean $hit cause mad producers are using Logic and DP. and most serious studios have Logic and Protools.  A lot of people LOVE Logic!!  It does a lot more than Protools when it comes to midi  especially Platinum; it comes with built in softsampler, mad plugins,  and lots more.  I dont know if you use Mac, but Mac bought Logic (emagic) last year. So you can bet Logic is ahead and will stay ahead.  ProTools is fallin behind quick and need to stop their monopoly game with us.  Its wack that ProTools doesnt have OSX version, and that it cant be used with other hardware.  I'm going Logic this year once I get some $$ together.  Pro Tools still has its place though.....Its up to you, but personally  I think the MBox is wack.......

I wouldn't get the M-Box because it does not have Midi in/outs. Can't sync up MPC with software due to no Midi Input/outputs on box.  I have the M-Audio Quattro; which works good with laptops. It has only 4 in/outs & 1 Midi in/out; which means that you can sync using MTC to software.

yo keys..... I am not sure but, if you have firewire input on your laptop...... go to sweetwater.com,   they have this thing called the xproject that hooks up to the digi 001 and then in to the firewire port on the lap top.... this way you can use the laptop with the 001.

Inside the xproject box, is the pci card and a hard drive ..... I am pretty sure it will work.... check it out... If I'm wrong someone school me.......

this way you can use the 001 with any mac and not have to worry about pci card or hard drive.......easy

Trev,

The X Project is a hard drive that was disigned to be used with Digi 001. It's nothing more that just that.

If I had only a laptop to work with then the Echo Layla24 is the safest way to go. The Layla24 allows CardBus mastering to your laptop & Midi IN/OUT together in one unit. You mentioned that you have an MPC & a Motif. This means that you'll have more than eight tracks that you may want to record simultaneously, but you'll be hard-pressed to find another interface that has more inputs, Midi IN/OUT, Firewire or CardBus on the same piece of hardware. I'd check the Digidesign Website to see if they offer ASIO drivers so that you can use Pro Tools along with the Layla24.

A quick note on Pro Tools. While it is a popular program, the RTAS & Audi-Suite plug-ins are really expensive ($200 - $1,000+). I believe you could benefit more from other recording suites (Digital Performer, Logic, Cubase) that come bundled with a lot of VST instruments & effects . You could then add more VST plug-ins later on at more reasonable prices.

I forgot to bring up audio interfaces with FireWire. It seems like all the new interfaces are migrating to the FireWire format and leaving behind PCI cards. If your laptop has FireWire then I recommend the Presonus FireStation over the Layla24. I could go into the details, but this link does it better!

Wow!!! I have not seen that Presonus unit until your post.  I have a Motif too.  What I really like about it is the M-Lan support.  But since I'm using a Tascam DM24 mixer with TDIF and ADAT interfaces, I think the Motu 2408mk3 may be the best way to go for audio.  I am also interested in th integration of 96k sr into my setup.   So once someone creates a box like the Motu 2408mk3 with the preamps and M-Lan from Presonus, that works with Logic, DP and hopefully Pro Tools,  I'll be the first one to buy it.  But for now, its hard to know which way to go.

The M-Box isn't that great, but the beauty of using Pro-Tools is that lots of other musicians, producers, and studios use Pro-Tools.  This means, if you also use PT, then collaborating with others is as easy as carrying around a external hard drive or even a CD.  You can do pre-production at home and then bring your project into a PT equipped studio via a CD.

I back Itchy on this one. It's one of the reasons I went with the Digi package. The only studios I have access to only use Pro Tools. The Digi-001 is the cheapest package that offers audio interfacing, Midi interfacing and most of all a powerful software suite that's compatible with Windows. I have yet to buy a plug-in though. Too expensive. I'll have to take my pro tools file to a studio with Pro Tools that has all those expensive plug-ins.
