hy dr. and anyone! slicin samples and loops is somethin i discovered quite recently (i never did this on pc softwares, and am quite newby with mpc's) but as i mentioned above it fascinates me more and more! the past weeks i just cut up loop after loop! ...and maybe someone here can give some input on how to do it better! basically what i did is to take or sample a drumloop or make it on my own with the beats runnin out of my mpc, through my mixer and than back in it again! usually i did a max. of 4 bars! and slice it up in the regions page into 1, half or quarter bars! and then played around with them on my pads while reckognizing that overnight has been born the best drumer since ... 1957! o.k. maybe thats slightly exagerated but ... just slighty! many quests about it - here we go:
1. do you slice them in other measures? eg. just single hits, or not even complete hits to do your rhythms?
2. how do you slice them? on a pc-software or on the 4k? i prefered the 4k!
3. slice library: i thought, maybe its usefull to create an organizational structure or as dr. said a library of loops! from 100 to 200 bpm all the way up, maybe organized somehow according loop stiles (dnb, techno loops, jazz loops, ... country, sorry guys, no, that mustn't be)! so that when doin a song having always some kind of loops ready to fit into! ...and if they don't fit, ... make them fit, the best a whole set of slices through stretching or pithin! quest: is this library doin way too much work or is it doin somebody els, too?
4. do you slice whole drumsets or do you slice them separately by instrument (eg just snares, just bd's, just hh, ...)
5. my slices do not fit all time! probably cause i cut them up at the end too early? any tricks here? what about this end margins field? how do you use it?
6. any tricks when slicin guitars, basses, pianos, strings, vocals, ...
7. i used mute groups! also had some probs with that (see post mute group problems)!
8. i also used the samples one shot! have now experience with samples played as loops, or as played! any tricks regarding different sample settings? and is that maybe the cause of the problem?
9. do you slice the loop of the sample, or the sample itself!
10. tricks withswinging as dr.'s one?
11. any tricks regarding slicin .... well done!
so guys ... i'll stop it for now! sorry again a long post! but you know, ... the questions just come up while tippin... and any input of more experienced slicers is much appreciated
cheers
