well first of all on needs to be the master and one needs to be the slave.
i am not sure which one you want as the master though or vice versa.
if the mpc is the master you then have to scroll from Drum to Midi and then select the correct channel. you should then be able to hit the mpc pads and get your keyboard sounds or record what you play on the keyboard onto the mpc via midi.

change the midi track you want to record the phantom on from DRUM: to MIDI: 1A. plug the midi out from the Fantom into the midi A of the mpc. Yeah: So, you go to bottom left of main screen, change drum to MIDI, and select chanel 1A for the first channel from the Fantom, and so on and so forth. You should also hit open window on that midi field, and scroll where it says 'soft thru ON' to "OFF'. That's only used when you have a separate keyboard from the synth that's being triggered (ie: "module") and that module needs to pick up the echoed message from the contoller to be triggered. When you use the synth engine inside the same box you are triggering with (ie: using the Fantom to play the keys AND generate the synth sounds, all in one), you will get double, phased out notes, unless you turn the soft thru off.
OK, #2: I use the Fantom as well. If it's the F Model, (NOT the S Model), do the following: Hit MODE, then choose MULTITIMBRAL. Before you do anyhting, select a temporary template. Hit LIST, then one cursor up to 'preset'. I just start with FANTOM Temp, and when I save, it goes into one of the user banks. More on that later. SO... the Multitimbral screen: Here are all your midi channels from top to bottom. They are in the left column. In the center is the sound you want on that channel. What's great is, just hit the LIST button, and use the soft key under the screen to check off Ctg. (category), and the list will change to from bank numbers to a list of instrument types. Select the category (bass, synth, strings, whatever), move to the list at it's right, and pick your sound for that channel. You can even play sounds and sequence sounds while in this screen. Hit exit when you are done picking that sound, and your back at the assignment window again, with that sound selected. Multitimbral (also called assignment)screen is also where you set output, panning, reverb, dealy, volume, etc. Cursor to the right to reveal the parameter columns for that sound. Remember when you sequence a track, you need to be on the right midi/track channel on the MPC, and you should also scroll to it's corresponding sound /channel on the Fantom, so that if you adjust anything, you will effect the proper channel.
IMPORTANT: Keep in mind that the channel at the top is actually channel 10, which Roland wants you to use for drums in the Fantom. You will notice that in the list is goes 1-16, but skips channel 10, which is set at the top of that screen. Why, I don't know, but you can go up to 10 and use other sound on it besides drums. Just don't forget that it's NOT channel one at the very top there. If you have th S model, you may be assed out, cus I don't rock that. But, it isn't that much different.
You have 16 slots for multitimral setups in the Fantom, and you save by hiting menu, and choosing 'Multitimbral edit'. Once you change the name, it will pick a slot and ask you to execute. If you have edited sounds (also done in Menu, with 'edit part patch') it will ask you to save those first. It will lwet you pick which user sound you want to replace with the edited one, but watch out, cus it won't necessecerily auto-select the one you want to throw out. Or you can save the setup without the edited versions of the patches. Don't accidentally replace multi setups or patches that you want to keep; don't hit execute unless you pick a safe slot. What I do, rather than mess with Floppy Disks, is just have up to 16 beats with mutitimbral setups in the Fantom, and once they are tracked into ProTools, I can replace them. If you don't track your beats, you could save to floppy, but I don't know how to do that whithout actually recording into the Fantom. Sometimes, when I don't edit most of the patches, I just type in the name of the patches as the track names in the MPC main sequence screen. Then I dial them up again later.
TIP: If you know you will be using a few keyboard tracks, why not make sixteen right off the bat, in the MPC? Jus t highlight the drum/midi field (lower left) on the MPC main screen. Hit open window, then press the soft key for 'RECORD 16', then execute, and hit play/rec when promted. You can stop it after the one bar count in, plus the first beat of the sequence. All you need is for the first beat of the first bar to be recorded, without even playing any notes in, then you can hit stop. Then, go back to main screen, reset the tempo (it will have defaulted back to 120bpm) turn loop back ON (it will have been switched to off) and reset your bar loop length to whatever you wanted. Easier than setting up 16 channels one by one.
Man, I hope this helps. I have the 2000/Fantom combo and I f'in love it. I am sure you will once you get it crackin. There may be some discrepencies, as I have the reg. 2000, not the XL, and the Fantom F-76. But those are the correct screen options etc, so if you do have the S, or can't find the screens on the XL, just ask an XL owner with the vocabulary I was using in the post. Oh, yeah, and, tell them other cats the Fantom is whack so they stay on that crappy Triton ish, and our S*%t sounds different!!
