I dont want to go into a deep explanation here, as it will detract from the real topic of the thread, but digital signal formats like AES/EBU, S/PDIF, and ADAT all embed a clock in the digital signal so the receiving device can synchronize to the transmitted data bits correctly.
The 2500 has no software functions in the current OS to select whether the 2500 slaves or masters the sync.
So we can assume that it does one of the following possibilities
1) Always acts as master
2) Always acts as slave (unlikely as what happens when theres nothing plugged into the digital input?)
3) Some combination of the above. It likely auto clocks itself to the digital input when sampling or monitoring from that input, and the rest of the time syncs to its internal clock.
