8 outs question trying to use mono but can't switch

Sorry to bring this back to life, but that's what the SEARCH function is for right? Anyways, I was going to ask this same question. I had noticed that when I went to the mixer section, I could only assign 1/2, 3/4 etc to the tracks instead of single outs, so after searching, I found this thread and I downloaded the Audicity software and when I loaded up some sample sounds, it said they were mono, but when I would play them, the meter bar would show both L/R channels going. Wouldn't that mean the samples were stereo and not mono? Is that why the mixer only gives me stereo outs instead of individual?
