Best thing to replace the floppy drive...

I'm gonna try and get a card read/writer. Still didn't get a reply from synchrotech and I couldn't find much on european sites regarding the synchrotech card read/writer. I'll have to do some more research on where to get my hands on one of these.

I browsed around on the forum and the synchrotech one kept popping up. Are there other alternatives for card read/writers?

Probably a stupid question but will I be able to save to the card from my mpc?

For all you european/UK guys wanting a card reader for an XL.

I bought one a couple of months ago, postage was cheap and the reader is less than £20.00

The box arrived (uk, midlands) in about 2 days following my order.

AFAIK you can go up to 2G cards but I use a 1G card with 0s 1.20.

thanks a lot guys. i just copped a near mint 2000xl for 500 with a scsi zip. i was debating between installin zip250 or card reader, and now i guess ill definitely go with the card reader.

I'm using a 1gb compact flash card and a 1gb memory stick with the 2kxl-mcd with no problems at all. I also bought a usb multi-card reader for my computer so I can tranfer data back and forth easily. You don't have to use the "remove hardware" feature in Windows XP, just simply remove the card(s) from the reader and stick them in the MPC!!!

I'm in whattarush's boat with the cardreader and mutli card reader. I have a 1gb SD card and I'm about to cop a 1gb compact flash.

This is what I did as far as buying and installing a cardreader in your 2000XL:

IDE Power cable and Data cable: http://www.vstservice.com. Don't order the whole MCD unit. Call and order only the IDE cables. No solderring. Plug and play.

And was this plug and play? Or did you have to solder and tamper a bit with the power supply?

if you have an extra hard drive or anything you can get an external hard drive case off ebay for like 15 bucks. And just put your hard drive in it. I have an 80gb hard drive i'm not using, i'm gonna buy a case for it and use it on the MP

I doubt your mpc will recognize the harddisk especially a 80 Gb drive on top of that you must make sure that it's a scsi harddisk.

I would have already tried to get an external scsi hard drive working. I had the thing lying around for years. But as usually, the minute after you finally chuck it out, you need it. The same with all my floppy disks really and stickers really. Chucked 'em all out two days before getting the MPC

If I need to buy anything new, I'd rather buy the most recommended option and the card reader/writer seems just that.

I'll have a look around our institute here for some old pc's with scsi hard drives though...

I have IDE/SCSI adapter so I'm gonna give it a shot... if it doesn't work, then i'm out 20 bucks. Worth the try. Plus it'll recognize it as a "device" rather than how much storage is on the device wont it?

No doubt but the problem is you still need to convince your mpc to format it, and this could turn out to be problematic with bigger disks. But you should def try the ide/scsi adapter route and keep us posted on whether this wokrs or not. Good luck btw.
