clipping

ok, say youre working in cool edit.
normally, you dont want to make a waveform pass the white lines on the space provided for a waveform because that usually results in clipping.
i like to keep an eye on the meter at the bottom of the program as well to make sure that it doesnt hit the 0 mark.

if you exceed this mark, you clip. thats only natural.

so if i upload say, a gangstarr track into cool edit and look at the size if the wave form, it FAR exceeds the clipping boundaries and hits zero on the meter all over the place, yet it dont clip. WHY?

Limiting. Limiters have a few settings, threshold, release and output ceiling. If you set the ceiling to 0.0db or 0.1 db the limiter won't allow the signal to pass that "limit". Limiting is really just a form of compression.

try this on your own risk, BUT: you can "overload" digital recordings..
this means a little bit of clipping is acceptable in mastering a sound...if it sounds right (ie no artifacts), then it is right...
