weird midi mute bug???

Aargh!! been having a really odd and annoying problem with the mpc today...

Im recording midi tracks on the mpc from my keyboard but when it comes to muting them in playback they will not mute completely and the mpc keeps on sendind MIDI note data!

Instead of muting its sending out NOTE ON followed immediately by NOTE OFF for every note in the sequence resulting in attack of every note being played on my synths and notes immediately cut off.

Tried saving sequence and rebooting but it's still happening.

Anybody else had this? Is it another damn os 1.1 bug thing??

I had this same problem a couple of days ago.
The problem was the continous sample track.
Even when muted , the midi notes would play.

Fasttracker hit it dead-on. Continuous sample tracks is...I guess continuous Even muted, it still triggers MIDI for external gear. However, this function was designed for audio samples only.

tarik, you shouldn't have this problem if you are using the latest OS.

OK so firstly, my continuous sample track is set to OFF. I'm also using the latest OS (1.1 18-Feb-2006).

..and this is what i am doing...

1. MIDI kboard into MIDI 1. Synth MIDI Out 1.

2. new sequence. track01
type: MIDI
Pgm: OFF
Mute: OFF
MIDI: 1A
Bars:2 Loop: ON

3. Record 2 bar MIDI sequence on track 1- plays back fine.

4. During playback press mute and track plays start of every note.
5. Stop, Press mute, playback - also plays start of every note.

This also happens on tracks other than track 1.
Also happens with a different synth.

I routed the MIDI out through my PC to look at the midi data and can see that it is sending midi note on followed immediately by off for each note whilst in mute mode.

so what do you reckon is going on here? faulty mpc, faulty OS or faulty owner?

I remember someone with the exact same problem a month or two ago. Can't find that thread though...

So..is your MPC connected to a hardware synth or your a software synth?

Also, do you get the same results when you change PGM: to something other than OFF?


Also make sure that SOFT THRU is turned OFF.

The only solution proposed there is the Continuous Sample Track thing however.

I remembered that guy was using a Virus synth so i searched for "virus" and "mute" without luck. The search sucks.

its sorted.. wasn't the continuous track function but was simply that "mute/stop of one-shot sample" needed to be set to through rather than immediate.

Not sure why, or whether this is an mpc fault or a feature, but just glad i can stop bangin my head against the wall about this. Was starting to think the mpc was just a box full of bugs but now i think its great again.

Hopefully this thread will help somebody else out in the future.

Of course...that's what was proposed in the other thread. I mixed it up myself

jahrome - I haven't had the mpc very long so i am still getting to know it, i dont want to judge it too quickly cos so far ive been impressed. One of the main reasons I bought it was for it's midi functionality, so a major disappointment that i first found was that i could only record a limited range of midi notes - this of course is a known issue but its difficult to find this out before buying it. second, there was this muting issue which is now sorted, and third, i have had some trouble with hanging MIDI notes on the mpc when using the midi thru option and playing fast 2 hand solo keyboard parts over what i have recorded on the mpc - i have a simple workaround for this tho which is a second midi cable from the keyboard to the module to switch to when i want to play the solo stuff. Im planning to take the mpc gigging soon so that will really put it to the test but for now im just gonna sit at home and get to know it inside out.
