Question about Hi-hat programming

Hi all! I'm new to this board and to the Akai MPC 2000.
A question to anyone who can help me with this:

I'm sampling and copying all kind of drum files to my Akai MPC 2000, but I have a problem with the hihat-editing:

I want to have the closed hihat, medium hihat and open hihat under the same drumpad and control them with the slider (just like I did with the MPC 60). Is this still possible with the 2000? And how?

And of course the different hihats have to react to each other, that means that the open hihat sound must be cut off as soon as I play the closed or mid-hihat (just like with real drums of course). How do I do that?

Hmmmm, Well what i do is put the different hats on different pads...Y not do the same (Just make the edits...Decay etc for each in the parameters page)

To get closed hats to shut off the open hat, this is what I do:

For example, you got closed hat on Pad1 and open on 2....Go into the parameters page (SHIFT F6>>Drum 1...Hit Pad 1...Press F2....Scroll down to Voice Over Lap....Highlight POLY...Then press OPEN WINDOW

Mute Assign Screen (right???) Under MUTES OFF: scroll down to 1st Note Off: Hit Pad 2....(This is simply tell the sequencer to cut off the open hat's decay in accordance to the closed hat event happen.)
Press Close (F4) and that should be it

Try it.....Program a 1bar loop with str8 16's & an open at the end.

that's called velocity switching.

Assign the 3 hats to the same pad set to velocity switch.

Then while sequencing assign the note var slider to the same pad and set to velocity.

yeh its possible. have 3 sound on one pad.

soft hit - sample 1

med hit - sample 2

hard hit - sample 3

Velocity switching like said above, chech it in the manual . . .

good for snare variations and such.

OK, hit the pad one hat, move the slider different hat, move it higher, another hat (or whatever sample you want)

I'd go with BRAVO on this one; stick a closed hat on pad 1, open on pad 2 and use the mute assign. Whether you also do velocity switching on these pads is just an added bonus. You could also do timbre emulation (shave of attack, add more low pass at lower velocities)

off the top of my head i think if you go to note assignment, move the cursor to the lower left hand spot & turn the dial you get velocity switching.

If you're used to playing live drums you might find it more natural to physically "open" the hi-hat by moving the slider like you would do with your foot, instead of just tapping different pads for different sound settings. I've been playing the drums for almost ten years, and while some patterns require you to use both hands on the hi-hat, i like to use just one hand for the hi-hat and one hand for the snare whenever possible. I find it easier to get into a groove this way. I guess it's the same with pads, i only use two pads when it is absolutely necessary. This is just my 2 cents though, everyone uses the method they're most comfortable with. For me it's one pad with 3 sounds/velocity setting with slider, and one pad with just an open hi-hat with mute assign.

Well the closed hihat muting off the open hihat works perfectly now. Thanks, Bravo!
To be honest. I agree also with Bravo to put the different hihats on different pads. Makes it more easy to play when open and close hihats follow each other rapidly in a 16th groove. Specially with funk and fusion it's easier like this than to move the slider all the time with the right timing.
And with 4 sound banks....well I'd say I have pads enough.
