noob question: what's them monitor foams???

what are those monitor foams that people's monitor speakers sit on. im guessing they're to absorb the vibration from the monitor or something but what is it, what does it do, and where can i get some from???

It absorbs vibration from your monitors, so your desk doesn't work as an amplifier
