So basically if a sample is playing the tap tempo will not work

What is the purpose of hitting the pads and using tap tempo at the same time? Is there really a need for this?

Patched Phrase tempo is calculated in the Trim menu. When you create a sequence with one, it follows any tempo changes..including tap tempo.

Although the 2500 needs another OS update (mainly for the MIDI bug), I am really curious to hear your thoughts of why this function should be improved.

alot of us dont use patched pharse or any of those auto matic chopping features.

I only use the zones or extract sample functions. I dont use patched phrase to chop my samples. The chop shop detect is fine for drum loops, but if you are choppin musical phrases you need to adjust the slice points. ALot of the time my chops are not exactly equal. So i use the equal zones then adjust accordingly.

you have to tap with the samples because sometimes you might only use 1/3 of the beginning of one sample, and 1/2 of another sample, etc. and those samples might be from differant sources and have differant tempos.

Sometimes one sample might be lets say 90 bpm, and another be 75 bpm. Well the entire loops dont match in tempo, but the first 2 notes of the 75 bpm might match a groove at 86 bpm and then the last 3 notes of the 90 bpm might match as well............if you cant tap with the pads youd have a harder time finding that groove..and half the time you are experiementing so patch phrase interrupts that.

tapping with the samples is all about experiementing with differant grooves, differant sample combinations, and doing it quickly so you dont loose the workflow. Hope this helps?!

Blue Haze,
Welcome to the 2500 forum. Any input? :P

yes there are other ways to find tempo but its all preference

If I understand you correctly....you mean to hold down a pad with a loop assigned to it and then use tap tempo to get the approx tempo? If that is so..I can see where this comes in handy. This can't be done with the current OS...so add my vote to improve this function.

After digging more into the 2500s tempo detect functions...it is really not that great compairing it to the MPC 2000XL. At least this is what I find so far. I get better results using the XL.

I mos def would like to hear Blue Haze's comments coming from a DJ perspective. From what I know about DJs..many never use tempo detect functions (at least the Al Bundy types/experts). Its all done by ear. The same can be done on this MPC.

all I want to see if the tempo not reset when I use tap tempo and hitting a pad......I m not into tempo detect or what ever ....but shit its all about the work around on this mpc ......everytime someone comments that the feature isnt as good as the older versions WHICH THEY SHOULD BE someone comes up with a lame work around that most people know how to do...but dont want to because it totaly slows down the work flow

is it really that wrong for people to ask for features that worked properly in 1997...to work properly now??

I donno!

The MPC 2000 that was released in 1997 had all sorts of issues with the first OS..as did the XL, 4000, 1000, and now the 2500.

No there is nothing wrong with asking for the 2500 to work flawlessly. Just know that it will come within time. And when the next OS drops..I can guarantee you that it will still have some problems. Why? Because Akai most likely use beta testers that are not MPC fanatics. Until they allow real users test the Operating Systems..it will always take a minute to fix all the problems.

The alternatives are always suggested because we have no other choice but to use them for the time...

agreed ....my 2000 was good but got better as the updates came out ......I just dont understand that if they can get a function right on one machien why not get it right on them all...I guess caz the 2500 runs on a super new os aswell as the 1000....so they need their time to tweek...

Yes..they are completely different machines. The 2500 (an even the homely 1000) has an entire laundry list of added features/functions. One day they will be as solid as a 2000/2000XL.

I understard that their is a great diffrence between the old mpc os and the new mpc os (1000 and 2500) but.....they should have kept all the features from the older model and added new features to it instead of taking things away....if u cant agree on that ...then I have no idea what u are trying to get at..........why take away whats needed for most people....like i seen in another post you said "take away the tap tempo I never have use for it" well alot of others make use of this function aswell as oher functions that have been taken away.... remember not everyone has the same work pattern and enjoyed previous models and would just like to see some functions be put back into the os aswell as taking advantage of the new features on the 2500 ....making the work flow much faster aswell making the transition alot smoother...

and as I remember ...in about 99 my mpc2000 had minimal bugs because of the updates ....so.........lets see in another year or so how things pan out!

Yes ,I agree with Cyrus on the matter it is important when matching 3/4 and 1/2 loops with different tempos hopefully Akai does fix the problem.

Question to add Jah are you still up for a collabo?

On the real no joking?

I do see your point....however..The tap tempo function is most likely a bug and not a feature they left out.

As far as taking away/adding features...most businesses conduct some research/market test, etc when they design a new/improved product. They just don't pull ideas (I would think) out of thin air. They must have really felt a few functions were not really needed for them to add to a newer MPC...at least not initially.

Maybe we will get them back with a new OS. Maybe they will give us something that will make us forget what we thought was impressive on the older models. Nowbody was expecting the major OS update for the 1000. Who knows what will happen to the 2500.

I must add that the few things they took out, they added two or more new functions that are used everyday.

Lets take the simult function that alllows you to trigger up to 3 pads. That was taken out of the 2500. But with the ability to use 64 programs in one sequence (versus 4 with the XL..and 1 with the 2000) that is a major come up. We can stack sounds for days with this new function. I would take this function over the latter.

In 99' the 2000 was pretty solid and they quickly moved on to the XL..which wasn't that solid at the time. But when you look back at what you can do with those MPCs versus what you can do with the new MPCs...really..its night and day. Off the top, I came up with 23 functions that the 2500 has and the XL doesn't. I picked up the 2500 for what it could do and not coundln't.

I really do feel you...but I am looking as if the glass is half-full and looking forward to that new OS.

Blue Haze,

As a DJ I would have thought your ear was trained to quickly sync to sound sources played at different tempos without any device?

As far as the colabo...you said that you were using Pro Tools. Well, it would be very easy to send OMF files back and forth.

word....well....this is how I look at it....the features they added to the new mpc..is cool but I only use 7 or 8 programs at most.....honestly I would make my full beat on 1 program if I had simult back ...thats how much of simult G I am.....4 banks of 16 pads is more then enought for me holmes .....chop shop is cool ..but I find my self chopping in equally parts as apost to auto chop...but ...input through is cool aswell as the 4 midi outs and grid edit ....I m feeling that ish for sure

I didn`t say exactly I was a dj just I learn dj production. If you ask it is basicallly beatmatching especially smaller than 1/2 a bar. MP3 files are ok to send I don`t have Digidelivery service. Basically if you can play riffs, loops and grooves like the French producer and send material back and forth I or you can import into Pro Tools and mix and arrange them. Then see about playing them out. Even if you got alot of old records tracks that will work too.

Maybe I and Jah can work together on some tracks nothing wrong with that.
