Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000
By pgk Sat Jan 24, 2004 4:52 am
Hi i recently brought a new mpc2000xl and am quite surprised by the instability of the OS. Before buying it i was told that they are quite stable.
However mine crashes quite frequently when recording with external midi instruments, in particular when sending sys ex to the mpc sequencer. When trying to delete tracks/seq with lots of sys ex messages a crash nearly always occurs. Also when i left the mpc for around half an hour while playing with another insturment i came back to notice that the mpc had a black line through the middle and all LEDS on, it had crashed. I turned it on and off, however didn't start up normally until i disconnected the power...

Are these crashes common? Has anyone encountered these crashes?

I think it's only fair that Akai updated the OS to fix these problems. Considering they still sell mpc2000xls new i think it's their obligation to keep updating the OS. Someone said something about starting a partition. I think this is an excellent idea. How do we go about doing this...

Call me cynical, but what would they care about a petition?
They've already gotten our money.

...and yeah, mine crashes now and then.

All I can Say is... MEMORY

Just like your PC your memory needs to be of the highest quality and supported by AKAI otherwise you will get crashes...

IF its the factory RAM send it back to Akai, if its new they will fix it for free or give you a new one... Don't put up with it if its Faulty because as you say if some sales guy sold it too you on the premise that it would be stable then you are entitled to a REFUND. And if he try's to tell you that they will send it away to be fixed, ask to speak to his manager because you are not satisfied. Demand a NEW one to test for the same problems as the unit may be faulty.....

Thanks man, i will check it further. I honestly thought that this was a problem will all mpcs not just mine. But it seems i am wrong. Is memory the biggest single factor or could it be something else as well?

GHOSTBUSTERS!

sounds like a classic case of SWPM

(that means Scary Wild Posessed MPC in laymans terms)

i hear you on this... most cats dont use lots of sys ex messages but i can make my mpc crash everytime if i want to (when controlling it from my peavy 1600x fader box). it just overloads its processing power.

but wait, notice how i said processing power? there aint a thing a new os can do about that. so if you plan on using that much sysex, find another hardware squencer that you can use just for that task (alone)... then sync that to the mpc.
i know that seems like a cop out, but thats just the way it is... remember that in terms of processing power the mpc is very primitive compared to the cheapest off the shelf computer at your local "best buy."
what it does do, however, it does real well. :)

Mine crashes almost every time I try to use VELOCITY>ATTACK.
I've reloaded the O/S also.

Does that sound like a bug thing, a RAM thing, or a processor choke?
:?

i dont know what it is, but that sounds bad, man...

its not a processor thing. i was talking aout processors only in terms of using lots of sys ex from external synths/midi cotrollers.
for the record, in my opinion:the mpc should be able to perform all the internal functions it was designed for.

on the same point, i dont thing its SIMM thing, but it may be...

how long has it been doing this?

I bought the MPC used (1 yr old) and it took me a while to get deep enough into the functions until I tried the Veloc>Attack. It's never worked right for me. I always figured it was a bug because everything else works.
Sometimes it crashes at random though...every once in a while.

maybe you should take it in and have someone look at it... sometimes there can be slight problems with the insides that dont effect most uses or only crop up every once and awhile.
but that doesnt sound like a bug to me...

the dude that i sold my mpc to said he would sumtimes hear static noize cmon out and faintly hear the beat.what can be the problem here?im guessin it might be the way he has the mpc hooked to his reciver?right?did this ever happen to anyone in here???

that just sounds like his conections are dirty. you can also hear a static sound like that when you turn the volume knob on older mpcs (and lots of older synths). im not a repair guy, but i dont think itd be hard to fix. just clean em.

Hey descartes, thanks for that info man. I got worried cause i thought mine was ****. I am using a Roland Juno 106 which has several sliders when you move the sliders it sends a heap of sys ex messages, however it must be noted it only crashes when i try to erase tracks/sequences/all events in a track that it happens. But it sounds like this is probably a problem with all mpcs. The sliders on my juno are also unstable thus continue to send sys ex messages, this might also have something to do with it... Who knows...
But yeah i think the features on this machine are wicked, and i suppose everything cannot be perfect.
Thanks to everyone to replied it's much appreciated.
