If the sound knock, it knock before mix/mastering.
You can add FAT or Grimey sound through mastering/fx, but if you compare it to another sound which has Fat/Grimey sound before adds, after mastering of the both you'll see the big difference between the 2 songs.
Your sound must knock in your sampler in first, and any sampler can have a Fat or Grimey sound, you must just to know how to do this with your material.

what's a "knocking" sound? hahah...does it say boo hooo? wtf...

i don't want a knocking sound, i want a sound that'll **** your sister. werd

but on topic note. mpc60 by far is the best sounding. i'd say the 3000 after, never used the 4k, but the 2kxl+2k and 1000+2500 i think would have a battle, both have shitty samplers stuck in em.

a lot of ya'll place too much emphasis on the skill for sound. sure it takes a bit more, but throw any kick in a 60 it'll sound dope. throw the same kick in a 1k, you'll have to work really hard to get it to sound as good as the 60, and it'll never sound that good.

i'd rather a NON proccessed sound than a proccessed one. proccessing is currently the shittiness in most new music i find. there's WAY too much proccessing. with noobs who get VSTs and abuse them in...and make the sound all cheap and plasticky.

you can't polish a terd, probably one of hte most important quotes?:o

I suppose 'Knocking' is like 'Bumping' or 'Banging' - in other words an quick transient response and fast envelopes, and just a 'Punchy' sound, like 'Fat' or even 'Phat', you know what I'm saying?

Anyway, if you like it raw, I suppose the 60 is the best for this style, as it affects (effects?) the sound, esp if you sample into it (is there another way?). It has a compression effect and a 12 bit effect (surprise surprise) that makes it sound gritty, not as hifi as most of the others I suppose. I find on soft samplers and $h|t i always have to apply a 12 bit effect plus compression to get drums sounding good!

Guess i just talked myself into getting a 60!

If the 3000 sounds anything like the S-3000, it's not bad sounding. Quite 'tight' I think.

I guess the 1000 sounds ok, but that add on EQ on the output is worrying, why does it need that? Should be flat.

Dunno about the 2000, never really struck me as being spectacular, but not bad. 4000 and 2500 I havent heard, but WTF is with the 2500 having the same sampling engine as the 1000 or is it 2000? I dunno, lame step back from the 4000's 96K at 24bit engine... they shoulda scaled that down and worked on that for the 1000 and 2500, but then I guess the Neumark MPC's are gonna take a different route. I hope they understand the weight of the 'professional' in the Akai PRO name...

After reading this tread I sampled a phrase from TV on my MPC 2000XL and on my S 950 (at the highest sample rate, supposed to imitate a MPC 60) simultaniously and it lead to an audible difference of the two samplers:
Compared at the same audio level, the S 950 has way better highs, but a few less of bass, the MPC 2000XL´s sound tend a little to be low-middy.
The slight lack of the 950´s bass might be caused by it´s lack of bitdepth.

But this is only my impression from the comparison.
I would never consider the S 950 or MPC 60 to be bass-lacking, the sound of these two is really a bit better than it is on the MPC 2000XL.

I wish there was a equal way we could just do a real A/b blind test with all the mpc's and settle this once for all. I know we cant so here is just a ideal i have come up with! Lets just come up with a good hard fact list off all the producers out there and from what we know "Gear they use". Then once we got a good list everybody can do some researching themself and listen to some of the tracks produce by these producers. I did this and i have come to the understanding all mpc's(i dont know any tracks produce on a 1k or 2500) sound different. I cant say if there is a better or worse sounding one. I myself could not point out what track was produce on what mpc or non-mpc with out the list. I think at the end of it all comes down to sample selection, sound design and mixing skills. One thing i did was study the Aftermath, Shady, G-unit team of producers. Scott storch and Em and Mr porter and been known to use the mpc 2000xl while Dre and hi tek and sha money xl uses a 3000 and red spyder uses a 4k. All these guys might have a good link in getting there tracks mix by the same engineer. Nobody shyt sounded as good at Dre's tracks. Hi tek stuff did come off as the runner up. Scott storch sounds wasnt as big as Dre but i would say more polish than Em's so called produce tracks. To me Sha money and red spyder tracks was equal to em and storch! I would say these guys have the best chance of recycling sounds right under our(should i say)ears with out we knowing it. At the end of the day its about taste then its about skills with sound design then its about the mixing! If you get that right it dont matter what mpc sounds the best!

you can do that though. all ya gotta do is hook up the various MPCs, get the sample sample set. and convert them via computer, load mpc3000 in mpc60 with 3.10 nad the others can load mpc3000 format, no? then just load the SAME exact midi sequence via disk. and see how it sounds:-)

My Fav is the 3000, All day. Love the way the 60 sounds but don't always want "thats sound".
1000 on up sound fine to me, What goes in comes out & that cool...
2000 series are the Low Quality MP3 of the MPC world and the Only MPC's who's sound I had a problem with.
