Filtering

I have used Software based recording set-ups in the past such as Acid + Soundforge and Reason + Recycle.

As alot of you may know, the filter on Reason is just as simple as turning a few knobs and you can filter out hiss/drums and whatnot.

I'm having a difficult time figuring out how to put a simple filter on my whole beat. I want to be able to tighten up the mix some. I have seen that i can filter a sample with the slider but when i play with it i don't hear any difference in the sound.

What is the easiest way to use a filter on a beat?

i create hip hop and i've just been using the strategy of creating one sequence and muting/unmuting tracks in real time into a digital recorder.

I understand teh song mode. But i haven't really used the Step Edit features yet. I'm just looking to find the easiest way to put together complete tunes.

I'm just looking to find the easiest way to put together complete tunes.

careful with the oxymorons there...shortcuts are verrrrry rarely worth it when it comes to samplers and the music making process.

i suggest you learn song mode better and break out of the 1 sequence box...that is ultimately the most simple and uninspired way to produce a track. i mean it'll serve a purpose if you are just creating a very simple backing for an emcee, but it doesn't give you much room for progression, evolution, tempo changes, morph ins/outs, breakdowns, basically everything that makes the song good...

i completely understand this. That is why i'm curious. I've only had it for 2 weeks or so and haven't put alot of hours into it yet. I've been doing ok, but this is a whole new beast for me. it'll probably be months before i feel really comfortable with laying a track out.

it's a bunch of song making techniques, some good ones in there. i suggest you read it.

forgive me for trying to rub your nose in this sh!t but i like to get em while their young...i'm waging a quiet war on lazy production...i'll admit, i have selfish motivation - i just wnt to listen to good music.
