So what would you do? NEW or USED?

So I'm in the market to get an MPC 1K and I am torn. I REALLY want the new black model, but the sensible person in me is saying to get the older blue and red model used and save a bunch of money. I know the appearance does not have anything to do with the performance, but god damn, it just looks so nice!!!

So what would you do? Save money and buy the ugly or go big and look good? I am really tight on money, but I don't want to buy the blue and be bummed.

Also, has anyone seen the older blue model with the black casing that VST offers on it? It seems like it may look a little wierd due to the blue cursor buttons, but who knows? I would love to see a photo.

Also, does appearance mean much to you, or am I just trippin? Thanks!!!

I was in a similar spot recently. I went out with the idea of picking up a new MPC, but the store had a used one for $720, which was a saving too big to ignore for a machine in perfect condition. I guess I'm not too bothered by the looks of the thing, so maybe you're trippin' after all

The one I bought came with the old version 1.07 OS, so the first thing I did (after checking all the ins and outs and buttons worked) was to download OS2.1 from akaipro.com, and I'm having a good time learning to use it. Just recorded my bass into it tonight, chopped it up, turned it into a patch phrase, and was impressed by how far I could change the tempo before it started to sound bad.

Anyway, back on topic; get a blue one from a place you can take it back to (check the return policy for time limit/'restocking fee'), and if the colour really bugs you and outweights the fun you're having with it, then it might be a sign that the thing just isn't for you in any case ...

if u get the blue one u can buy a black kit for it to be like the 1k bk so u can save big money on it , i bought my mpc 1k brand new for only 820 and that was a hella good priice .... but i would go with somthin new in my case .

Thanks guys. After much internal debate/talking to myself/spending too much time on the web, I think I'm just going to get the new black one. It's hard to know what these used ones on Ebay have been through. They are probably more dirty than a Vegas hotel room after a porn convention.

P.S. Anyone want to buy Reason 3.0 and Recycle from me? They are fully working copies with serial numbers.

I also have Sony ACID Pro 5.0, Sony Sound Forge 8.0 and Sony Vegas 6.0 I don't have a PC, so these programs are not doing me any good.

If you are really concerned, you can always buy the black kit for $75. Buy new if you can afford it, if not, you arn't stuck with blue.

Have you seen the black kit on a blue machine? If so, do you have photos? I wanna check it out.

Also, do you recommend used machines from Ebay. Are MPC 1K's usually pretty tough and reliable to the point where buying a used one is no big deal?

A black kit on a blue 1k will look the exact same as the black new. Ebay, i don't trust for anything...

nah, the new black 1ks have different colored volume, sliders, buttons. they would look a little different.

That's what I was figuring. Looks aren't that big of a deal I suppose. I just know that if I bring some hot latin ladies home from around the block and they peep my circus colored gear and bounce, I would have to press charges against Akai...

One last question. How is a 2500 for someones first MPC? Good or no good. Just thinking incase I save up enough money...

I haven't owned an MPC, but I am very computer/technology litterate. I'm pretty sure I could figure it out pretty easily. I even made a beat on one at Guitar Center in Hollywood. Actually if you wanna peep my shit, just head up there and check it out. My beat is the one on the 2500. I'm willing to work deals on that shit for all you MC's out there who need some serious heat...OK, I need to go to bed, I'm starting to lose my mind!!!

well... I have a blue and a black, and I can tell you that the buttons color scheme is almost identical (the black will have some grey stuff where the blue would be white... that's all - there ain't no blue buttons on the blue MPC1k, only white and red).

So: go for the blue and save money to buy records. Don't bother about the black. And who said black was looking better? I prefer the blue one, and the only reason i got a black one was the opportunity given by a pal traveling to Japan early this year. That's all.
Japanese prices are very low. I got my mpc1k bk for a bit less than 720 euro, including RAM expansion and HDM10 kit.

why not customize it your self. and quit complaining about a blue or black one? Also you can buy a black kit and or two ,customize one to your liking and keep the blue and black for interchangable faceplate?

I copped my Blue 1000 for 815 at Guitar center. New. Not too shabby.

But as everyone stated. You can turn your blue 1k into a black one. But in the end its up to YOU cause da money aint coming out of our pockets.

no kidding, its not like you're going to be putting rims on the thing and creeping around the neighborhood.
