To take some of the points discussed:
a paper back book could be worth it
I would just like to point out the realities of having this book in 'paper' format.
First off, I'm in the UK, so shipping to the US (85% of my customers) for a 262 page, A4 bound book would cost in the region of $40-$50 alone.
Next there's actual printing costs. I'm not a publisher, I have no book deal, so I would have to self-publish the book. In book terms, it would be a very limited run (i.e. niche market). It would also have to include color photos on around 40% of all pages. Do you have any idea how much that would cost to print up for an independant self-publisher? Have a look at cafepress for a better idea.
In reality, to provide this book in paper format with shipping, priniting, admin, credit card fees and a small profit, we would be talking over $120.
But my point is, try to give rebate's or discounts to your true followers
Thing is, I do appreciate my existing customers. Every single newsletter that gets sent out includes at least 2 special customer-only deals ranging from 25-50% off various products. I also have various ideas in the works for the future. But as stated before, I do feel that the MPC ebooks are already discounted as far as I'm willing (and is practical) to go (see below)
But it is priced over what people or I should think it should be priced. 20 dollors seems more resonable, even though its cheaper i would still think MORE people would by it.
when I first released the XL book, it retailed at $89.99 (and it sold pretty well). So the book
is half price, and some. Asking me to discount it greater is asking too much. I can't please everyone - if I sold it for $20, you can bet there would be a thread started bitching about how it should be $10. I appreciate that you personally feel $40 is too much, but sales history of the XL book has shown that you are in the minority and most people understand that $40 is a fair price for the wealth of high quality content inside. In fact 90% of the sales last night were referred to from this thread.
Once again I point that I can go over to a certain competitor and get 720 sounds for $79.99. For half that price, by buying the book you get the same number of sounds plus you get a 250 page book with 51 tutorials. There simply is no comparison. When you buy anything in digital format - sounds, software etc, you are buying the quality and work inside. I'm not dissing my competition here, I'm sure their sounds are worth the money - just underlining the state of the market and the pricing levels - and in relation to that market, my MPC ebooks are completely
under priced.
In fact I'd like to get past the 700 samples issue, because I feel that the $40 is a great deal just for the text in the book alone - the sounds are just an added bonus. Yes I'm biased, but have you ever wondered why none of my competition has ever come out with a rival ebook? It's because they take so damn long to create and cannot be knocked up in a few days like some of these DVDs I've seen that barely scratch the surface of what is possible with the MPC. There's very little profit margin in a product like this, due to the many months it takes to create.
