high hats question

ok.. i've had my mpc2000xl for a while and have used the manual as best i could to learn the various functions of the machine.. i'm curious as to how my get my high-hats to come off with that same bounce/style as some of the dirty south joints i've heard like bonecrusher "never scared", ludacris "splash waterfalls" or ti "rubberband man".. it seems that the high-hats play at an accelerated tempo compared to the rest of the drums.. i've tried to mess with the timing/quantization to get that kind of effect but either i'm doing something wrong or i'm looking in the wrong spot to try to achieve this.. if this type of programming is possible with the 2000xl, can someone explain this or point me in the right direction? thanks alot fellas.. peace!

The trick is , the beat is actually quite slow. Around the 80-90BPM mark with hats programmed in 32's....Thats the basics anyway. The rest comes in velocity edits , swing , ghost hits, cubasa's

Another tip would be to play your notes/keys etc with a 1/8 click rate :wink:

to make it more simple do the following:

make a 2 bar pattern just to get your feet wet with the hi hats on 1/16 all the way through (hold the note repeat while you doing this)
while you playing it back, change to 1/32, hold note repeat and tap the hi hat pad again but only on certain spots not the whole way through and boom, you got that dirty south hi hat jumpy ish. 1

you mean the outdated Stutter effect

You can do it that way if you like but you got less control over the hats that way - The way I said is how i do it....But each to their own

i do it like you too, im just giving him an easy example so he can get a quick idea, then he'll experiment more and make something more complex if you will. you gotta learn how to crawl before you can walk.

As far as the "old-stutter" way, delete some of those notes after you have programmed them 1/16 + 1/32 etc, and you can have a unique sound of your own. Just delete them at will and not think too hard about it.

easiest way is to slow the tempo way down, turn timing to 32nd notes. Play whatever you want, speed it back up, you got all the hi hat rolls and what not.

check up on Step Edit in the manual too... If you didnt play it exactly how u want it, go to step edit and tweak it to your liking.. holla again if u need more help

I have made many songs down at 73-85 BPM. I set my quantize to 1/32 and record my drums, then when doing hi hats I assign the same closed-hat to 2 pads next to each other and only use 1 open-hat. Maybe that will help. Slpash Waterfalls hhats would be a good example of what I'm talking about. Then maybe OPEN WINDOW on "timing" and mess around with LATER/EARLIER for the hi-hats only track.
