Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000
By mcl169 Fri May 12, 2006 5:12 pm
Ok things are comming along since I got my MPC. But when I listen to other peoples beats from the MPC I realize My Kicks are not as punchy and my snares dont have that dirty raw quality that I know the mpc is good for. I Feel my samples are pretty good but I need to manipulate the MPC better. Can some one tell me or refer me to the info. I think the secret is in the velosity but so far I havent acheived the raw punchy sound I want that realy jumps out. I dont mind doing my homework and reading up on my craft. Can some one give me references to the punchy kicks and sharp dirty ram snares.

The secret is not to be found in the MPC, it is in EQing and editing the dynamic of the sounds right, either before or after sampling them.
And in lots of experimentation!

Good drum sounds come with experience. Thats a fact

Yea I know you half to start with good samples but what about getting the velosity to push it. When I mess with the velosity I dont hear a difference after 100%. Also is'nt there a way to make snares dirty so they have a raw quality. Something like lowering the bits or quality.

" Something like lowering the bits or quality. "
So why haven't you tried that?

"When I mess with the velosity I dont hear a difference after 100%."
Ok, face it, there's no differnce after 100%, move on to your lowering bit rates thingy.

"Good drum sounds come with experience. Thats a fact "
90% of the time you just gotta let experience and time take it's course.
Jacpot's right.

Ok so basicly it's time to put in some work. I have'nt had the MpC that long so I just have to dig deep into my newest piece. Yo Lamp whenI get a chance I'll post a track so YOU can see what I'm working with. I'm a MPC newbee but not a Production newbee One!

Hint>>>> PREAMP>EQ>MPC >Compression .....If you don't have a preamp try normalizing your signal but you will gate better results with a preamp. You can boost your signal volume in Soundforge . Bit reduction is an old trick for getting the "dirty" sound But there are lots of other ways to degrade a sound without reducing the Bits. A tube preamp will give pretty good results as well as some distortion in the start of the signal. Experiment if you have a wave editor fool around with some plug ins and try making your drums mono using both channal signals. Dig around this forum there are lots of good tips .
