Does anyone have any idea as to what is the max number of sound cards/devices that is allowed in Windows XP?

Dont quote me on this but you may be able to have as many as you like but you can only assign one to play your audio through...

Depends how many irq are already taken for pci cards. For usb/firewire cards yo can run as many as you can plug in, but 2 or more on one usb card or on the motherboard will mean they share bandwith.
Most audio programs work with Asio drives now, and you can only assign one driver to be your in/output. The only way to get around this is using one driver for all your cards wich means they have to be the same brand and work with the same drivers. RME, MOTU and ST-Audio cards can do this.
