SCSI ZIP not found on mpc3k?

hi,
I've already used the search function - no answer to my question found.

Here's the deal:
I'm new to the mpc3k (but not new to mpc's and sp's...), maybe I can't see the solution while I stand in fornt of it...
I connected my 100MB ZIP Drive (with the disk inside -sure...) via scsi with the mp. now I'm trying to format the disk, but the MPC says it doesn't find any scsi harddisks...

the ZIP worked with mi 2kxl very well. so I don't think that the ZIP itself is the prob.

Is it because my MP is running OS 3.03 (at the moment!!! new chips will be orderd)? Or is it because the ZIP Disk itself already contains data? (data from the 2kxl, which I want to delete/format)

Maybe the SCSI adress number of the drive is set to "6", or "0".
My samplers didn´t work with drives that were set to these numbers unless I changed the number that the samplers should search for.
That is because samplers mostly adress these numbers to themselves.
Set the SCSI adress number of the drive to "5" and try again.
(...if this is possible on the Zip drive.)
Most samplers (like Akai´s S samplers) use to search for drives with adress number 5 first.

I am also new to the 3000, but maybe it needs more time for searching for the drive than newer MPCs.
The SCSI fuse of the MPC´s SCSI connector may also be blown up.
You should check if the MPC works with other SCSI disks or try to connect it to the drive with another SCSI cable.

It doesn´t matter if the disks to be formatted already contain data.

I had similar problems eventhough I'm running 3.10

www.mpc3000.com got an iso image of a 100mb zip formated for the 3k.
Worked for me.

I'ma check that out when I'm back home... I already forgot about that whole scsi number issue...
I'ma head to the studio and get the other zip drive, cuz the one I've got at home with the mp has no switch for changing the scsi number...

The MPC3000 will be most happy with ZIP drives that are "SCSI ONLY MODELS" and not "HYBRID OR PLUS MODELS".

If your ZIP drive is missing the ID selectors then it is possibly a "PLUS" model, a "HYBRID MODEL" that communicates via parallel or SCSI.

MPC3000 machines often have trouble with these models.

The correct type of ZIP drive to work with an MPC3000 is the "SCSI ONLY MODEL" or simply, SCSI ZIP DRIVE.

Said drive will have a termination switch and also SCSI ID selectors to switch between ID 5/6.

The ZIP SCSI ID can be set to either ID 5 or ID 6 as the MPC3000's own ID is 7 ( and not 6 like other people say incorrectly ). The SCSI ZIP drive should have it's termination switch enabled if it is the only or last SCSI device in the chain.

Note also that earlier MPC3000 OS versions, pre and possibly including version 3.10 did not correctly handle certain ZIP drive revision "flaws".

"Flaws" that caused all sorts of problems when a "FORMAT UNIT" command was received from an INITIATOR device, in this case ... the MPC3000.

Issues concerning the ZIP drives in this regard were dealt with in versions 3.11 and higher.

thanks rohan! that's what I wanted to hear... pheeew... I now checked my other zip drive.. it's the scsi only one. but, I can't check wheather its working or not because it only has the "female" scsi connection for the cable..now I gotta buy a new cable too...how boring...zzzz...
