Joining sequences

How do u join sequences so that they are playing at the same time, only i am new to the mpc 2000xl, a made 1 sequence, and then a second one, went into song mode, and joined them together, but they didnt play at same time

thats not what song mode does. at least not on the 2k.

song mode lets you arrange your sequences into a song format....

But that isan option on the xl. Ive never found any useful time to use it. Im not in front of my mpc right now but its not hard to do. Just poke around and open a few windows, you will find it.

"2nd sequence feature. You can assign a second sequence to be played with the currently selected sequence. This is not as much as it seems at first. All you get is to select one sequence to basically play 'in the background' for any sequence that is selected in the main screen. OK, an example would probably help. This is buried in the MISC screen but I don't know why. I go there and select SEQ-9 as the 2nd sequence. When I go back to the main screen, it indicates there's a 2nd sequence. I Start SEQ-1, and SEQ-9 will run at the same time. I switch to SEQ-3 and SEQ-9 will still be running, I switch to SEQ-2 and SEQ-9 will still be there until go back to the MISC screen and turn this off. I'm not sure why this feature is even there. I guess if you want to try different basslines with one sequence of percussion. I dunno."(mpc200xl)

i don't understand why it's there at all... why would someone wanna play 2 seq's at a time??? I really don't understand the purpose of it. Maybe it's usefull for live purposes...

It can be very usefull if you want to test lets say the bassline of one sequence you did against another sequence you are working on (mute bass on current seq and solo bass on 2nd seq). It just lets you quickly audition it to see what it sounds like. You would never leave it that way... if you like it, you combine it into the same sequence. Just like how you can quickly test transposing notes and then apply it later if you decide you like it.

Another use is that you could play a 3 bar seqeuence along with a 2 bar sequence. Unfortunately no MPC allows different track lengths in the same sequence, so this is the only way to do that.

Finally the COULD have made this feature awesome if you could switch it on the fly live and "mix" from one sequence to another. That would have made the MPC such a better live tool... oh well.
